San Geronimo Golf Course Clubhouse

Description

The nine-mile drive west from Highway 101 to San Geronimo Golf Course is much like passing through the stages of a visit to a good spa. You start out jangled from jousting with traffic, then drop into Sir Francis Drake Boulevard’s slightly less hectic pace. By the time you reach Fairfax, you’re enjoying the wooded hills and small-town charm. Five minutes later, as you climb over White Hill summit into the San Geronimo Valley, your cares have practically evaporated—you’re too busy looking at the valley’s cow pastures, fir forests and brawny hills.

Your destination is the inviting clubhouse at San Geronimo Golf Course, a two-story structure rising above the greens on a flagstone-dressed base. It’s been a wedding site for 37 years, and it’s easy to see why: people love San Geronimo’s surroundings and beautiful light. Whether the day is sunny, foggy or rainy, the southern light here pours through the clubhouse’s big picture windows in abundance. At night, the building is a blaze of brightness against the rural valley’s velvet darkness.

The main wedding and reception area is the second-floor bar/restaurant, which boasts a large dance floor. With its floor-to-ceiling windows, the space looks out onto the golf course and across the valley to a high wooded ridge. The ceiling and window moldings are finished a bright white, while the carpeting is medium green with subtle gray mottling. The sum effect is a light-loving, sun-splashed place. Just outside, a grassy area by the main walkway can be set up with an arch and chairs for an outdoor ceremony. (Most couples choose to use this space, which is included in the rental fee.)

San Geronimo caters all events here, and their catering ability is one of the facility’s biggest draws. An unflappable staff can handle any contingency or conceivable menu request—everything from pretzels and hot dogs to French champagne and custom-made gravlax.

Beyond its culinary expertise, San Geronimo prides itself on its staff’s communication skills and accommodating ways. They take whatever time clients need to feel relaxed and listened to when discussing what they want at their wedding. They’re also flexible about matters like
scheduling, allowing people to come on site early to decorate, and then celebrate well into the night. "San Geronimo’s real niche," says the Food & Beverage Director, "is our willingness to adjust to people’s needs."

San Geronimo’s policy of full disclosure means that all expenses are included in wedding estimates—food, drinks, taxes and gratuities. Because the figures are real numbers and not negotiating ploys, this facility wins over its fair share of "tire kickers." Also, because the F&B director understands that most brides feel their best when somebody else is minding the details, he’s happy to be available during the reception on request.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, San Geronimo isn’t some posh, old-money country club. It’s a bright place in Marin County’s green heart that comes with an open attitude, an award-winning kitchen and an almost-40-year-old tradition of service.
