Description
When they first see a photograph of this place, many people remark that it looks like a castle on a wooded Scottish brae or a medieval village in central Europe. It’s easy to understand why this seminary on a hill evokes such romantic associations. First there’s the powerful Romanesque massing of Montgomery Memorial Chapel, a stone church near the seminary’s main entrance that is one of its two most popular wedding sites. Then, up the hill, there’s Stewart Memorial Chapel at Geneva Hall, a splendid small white church with an arcade, a soaring campanile, a terrace that overlooks a breathtaking view, and stained-glass windows whose intense colors rival those of Europe’s Gothic cathedrals.
In between the two ceremony venues is a tree-shaded campus with grand lawns, old moss-covered stone walls, classrooms, Victorian homes for faculty members and rock-faced administration buildings that look like Scottish castles. Among so many sites there’s an embarrassment of riches when it comes to reception spots. The most popular is the Geneva Hall terrace, a curving sweep of stone that provides one of the finest, most unusual panoramas in Marin: the north flank of Mt. Tamalpais; Ross Township’s redwood-covered ridges; Bald Hill; the seminary’s signature stone academic buildings; Red Hill; and views down the Ross Valley. For very large receptions, including ones where you might want to pitch a tent or two, you can take over the vast redwood-ringed lawn right at the main entrance.
There’s a more prosaic form of beauty here, too: because the seminary is a religious nonprofit entity, it can offer its beautiful grounds and facilities at prices that are considered quite competitive by Marin County standards.
The seminary has other deal sweeteners, including several Victorian houses for rent that can accommodate small pre-nuptial parties or a pre-wedding stay. You can rest overnight at the seminary, then awaken fresh the next morning, knowing you don’t have to travel anywhere for the big day. Besides a choice of romantic chapels and the campus’s overall enticing feel, couples also like the availability of unlimited parking and almost universal accessibility for their disabled friends or family members.
This site is like a good day that just keeps getting better. First, the drive here takes you through some of Marin’s loveliest, leafiest neighborhoods, and then the campus itself charms you with its meandering lanes, compelling architecture and one-of-a-kind vistas in a county famous for its views. Once it wins you over, any other venue just won’t feel as right.
