Description
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, designed by world-famous architect Mario Botta, might well be the city’s most stunning architectural setting for special events. Just steps from San Francisco’s finest hotels, restaurants, cultural landmarks and boutiques, this striking 225,000-square-foot tribute to modern and contemporary art also hosts affairs of every description. From wedding receptions and elaborate dinner dances to private parties and corporate galas, they all play well in this spectacular venue.
Grandest of the museum’s event spaces is the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Atrium. Your guests can’t help but be awe-inspired by this glamorous 6,500-square-foot setting. An open spiral staircase winds its way up five museum floors to an aerial bridge and skylight that showers the room with natural light. Floors and columns of black and gray marble are contrasted by walls of honey-colored Nordic birch, creating a dramatic yet warm interior.
Walls have a way of disappearing like magic at the museum. On the south side of the Atrium, a set of stately blonde wood doors can be rolled away completely, revealing the elegant Charles and Helen Schwab Room. Twinkle lights, pin spots and wall washers create a dreamy illumination that lends this hall its ambiance of sophistication and romance. Like the Atrium, it’s well suited to anything from cocktails to buffets to genteel dinner-dances, but the smaller scale and softer lighting make it a more intimate space. Other walls roll away to reveal the charming Caff expansion. With a little courtyard and floor-to-ceiling windows, this bright, inviting salon can be used to augment the Haas Atrium and Schwab Room.
Adding to the amazing versatility of this site are the state-of-the-art Phyllis Wattis Theater, the multifunctional Koret Visitor Education Center, an enormous and fully equipped catering kitchen, and a museum store offering a personal shopper.
Housed on the four floors above the Atrium level are the museum’s internationally renowned galleries. They offer the perfect opportunity for guests to take a quiet seat, chat and survey the festive scene below. Any combination of floors and galleries can be made available for your event, allowing art fans to luxuriate in the various exhibits and mingle with the likes of Duchamp, Matisse, Kahlo and de Kooning.
