Description
There’s no chance you’ll accidentally drive by the St. Barbara—its bright blue tile roof and blazingly white walls fairly leap into your field of view as you approach the facility. Although the church is only available to those baptized in an orthodox Christian religion, the adjacent Center and patio can be used by the general public.
Outdoor ceremonies and champagne receptions take place on the patio, an expansive flagstone plaza that connects the church and the Center. The space is enclosed by a low white wall with its own flagstone seating ledge, and bordered by olive trees, large rocks and drought-tolerant plantings. It’s totally peaceful up here—nothing but sun, warm breezes and clear views of the surrounding mountains, the Goleta Valley and the Santa Barbara Channel.
After the ceremony, guests walk through a white archway into the main hall. It’s a large and lovely space with a high, open-beamed ceiling and two walls of tall arched windows that give it a spacious and airy feeling. Tables are arranged around a big hardwood dance floor (on springs no less!) and no matter where they’re seated, guests can survey the beautiful landscape around them. To the east, the scenery includes a lemon grove, vibrant bougainvillea, grassy hills dotted with eucalyptus and the Santa Ynez mountains in the distance; to the west, it encompasses the Santa Barbara hills, the university campus and the Santa Barbara Channel. Two small patios, one on each side of the room, can be set up for hors d’oeuvres and a bar or a buffet. And last but not least, there’s a built-in sound system and a commercial kitchen. With its great location, Mediterranean ambiance and unexpected amenities, this is one community church center well worth a visit.
