Description

Judging by its beautiful entrance, with a Tuscan-style gatehouse, trellised driveway and meticulous landscaping, Ruby Hill is no ordinary golf club. In fact, what lies beyond the impressive gates is not just a golf course, but an exclusive private community surrounded by vineyards and spread over acres of open land. So exclusive, that in order to take a peek at this lovely facility you have to make an appointment prior to viewing.

The Clubhouse and fairways are a short drive up the hill, and as you make your way slowly to the top, you pass dozens of spectacular homes, whose graceful architecture defines the development. Most of these houses are reminiscent of Italian villas, and when you finally reach the Clubhouse, you’re hardly surprised to find that it’s the largest and most striking "villa" of them all.

Step through the arched front door and you’re more than a little awestruck by the grand scale and inviting ambiance of the foyer, where indoor ceremonies take place. The vast marble floor gleams softly, bathed in natural light from a stunning domed skylight overhead. Elegant conversational seating is arranged beneath the skylight and in front of a large stone fireplace. You can’t help but notice rich details, like the crown molding, wall sconces and window trim, all seemingly fashioned from stone, and the eclectic antiques and art, which add a personal touch.

From the foyer, walk down the regal staircase into the Main Dining Room, where receptions and special events are held. (Brides, take note: the staircase could very well have been designed with your show-stopping entrance in mind.) The sheer grandeur of the space makes you want to sit down to fully appreciate the soaring 40-foot ceiling, giant potted palms and abundant light streaming in through a multitude of high windows and glass doors. Walls are painted a warm Tuscan wheat accented with creamy white trim, and the Florentine motif in the custom carpet swirls beneath your feet in muted earth tones.

To one side of the Main Dining Room is a similarly appointed small private dining room for rehearsal dinners or meetings. On the other side is the Lounge, a clubby space with dark maple woodwork, a marble fireplace and granite-topped bar that’s well-suited for cocktails. All three rooms open out onto an expansive arcaded patio that overlooks a formal garden and emerald lawn, as well as views of the golf course, the Livermore hills and Mt. Diablo.

The patio also overlooks a stunning oval terrace that’s custom-made for al fresco ceremonies and receptions. Paved with smooth Napa Valley stone and enclosed by two wisteria-covered trellises, the terrace feels intimate, despite the fact that it’s completely open to the sky, the breeze and panoramic vistas.

The effort that has gone into making Ruby Hill a showplace is evident in unexpected places, too. The women’s lounge (and carpeted "locker room") is practically palatial, not only in size, but in amenities such as elaborately tiled bathrooms with gorgeous granite counters, plush seating and mirrors everywhere. Even the telephone booths are refined private nooks with their own doors, granite counters and art on the wall!

This is a glorious spot for any upscale affair or holiday party. And if you’re interested in a corporate golf tournament, Ruby Hill has the first Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course in Northern California. The Clubhouse was built to exacting standards so that when Ruby Hill residents come up here they’ll feel right at home. Given the splendid surroundings, we’re quite sure they do.
