Round Hill Country Club

Description

"Alamo" is the Spanish word for "poplar" trees, and the first European settlers named this pretty hamlet in honor of the trees flourishing along the streams that run through the lush Diablo Valley. Over the years, Alamo has gained prestige as one of the Bay Area’s most exclusive communities, and today the township’s three square miles contain some of Contra Costa County’s most desirable homes.

Round Hill Country Club is a perfect fit for this upscale enclave. Set amidst rolling hills criss-crossed with equestrian trails and private ranches, it holds court atop a scenic promontory that takes in the area’s natural beauty as well as its own picturesque fairways. Membership here is pricey, and currently there’s a ten-year waiting list, but if all you want is a luxurious setting for your celebration, you’re in luck: Round Hill makes its opulent banquet spaces available to non-members.

Round Hill has been a favorite site for social and corporate events since 1961. A multi-million dollar renovation has expanded and updated the Club’s facilities, and the result is a fresh, polished appearance with tasteful artistic accents. A red tile roof, sand-colored exterior with sea-green trim, and an octagonal central tower remind you of a Mediterranean estate, but there’s definitely a contemporary twist to the interior décor.

Walk through the tall wooden doors at the entrance, and you find yourself in a spacious and welcoming foyer. A stroll across polished terracotta floors to the center of the Club takes you into the magnificent Rotunda, embellished with decorative sconces and dainty artwork on ochre and mint walls. An ornate wrought-iron chandelier hangs from the 32-foot-high ceiling, and miniature skylights let in rays of sunshine, evoking a sense of dreamy exultation.

If you’re not already impressed, you will be when you see the three distinctive event spaces themselves; collectively they encompass everything you could want for an elaborate celebration. First, receive guests in the Living Room, which acts as your own private salon. The comfortable sofas and classy Pacific Rim décor are right out of House Beautiful. Next, serve cocktails in the Breezeway, which runs the length of the Ballroom. Gorgeous tapestry drapes frame a long row of windows, and sumptuous armchairs invite guests to enjoy the view of the outdoors while nibbling hors d’oeuvres. Finally, host your reception in the refined atmosphere of the Ballroom itself. Textured beige walls are trimmed in polished oak, and flaunt a Romanesque fresco at each end. Icicle lights seem to float from the ceiling, highlighting the built-in dance floor. Arched windows look out onto the Breezeway, adding an expansive quality and encouraging guests to meander freely between the two spaces.

For something less formal, but equally appealing, consider the casual elegance of the Fairway Grill & Lounge. A high vaulted ceiling with rough-hewn open beams holds Mission-style chandeliers, and a cast stone fireplace ensures a warm and homey ambiance. Double-high windows look out onto manicured golf greens and the Fairway Patio. Wildflowers and topiaries decorate the Patio’s several terraces, creating a romantic milieu for wedding receptions.

Staging your event at Round Hill is like inviting guests to enjoy your own private villa. For the day at least, they can indulge in the privileges and amenities of this elite country club.
