Why We Like This Place
If you’re passionate about Chinese food, and your guest list doesn’t exceed 1,000, the Rincon Atrium and Yank Sing Restaurant are a unique combination of event spaces in the Financial District. Both are part of the Rincon Center, an impressive historic building that houses everything from businesses to federal offices to apartments. The Atrium is at the heart of the center, and Yank Sing is one of the marquee establishments around its perimeter. Anyone who reads restaurant reviews knows about Yank Sing’s scrumptious food. What’s rarely mentioned, however, is that the restaurant also has access to the Atrium for special events.
In contrast to its serious Financial District setting, the Atrium is a vibrant indoor courtyard that soars five stories and is topped with a glass ceiling. Built of polished granite with rich wood touches, its contemporary design is softened by an abundance of greenery: potted palms all around, and lush plants cascading off the balconies above. The focal point is a remarkable “rain column” fountain, whose five-story free fall begins at the ceiling and ends in a simple pool, set flush with the floor. And while this is a public use area, a sense of privacy is created by having the storefronts (all done in polished cherrywood) tucked unobtrusively around the outer circumference of the space. Four separate eating areas off the main walk-through also provide intimate gathering places. Events here have included everything from corporate holiday parties and elegant civic functions to weddings staged in front of the dramatic backdrop of the fountain.
Yank Sing is just steps from the Atrium. At the entrance, a picture of Alice Chan, the restaurant’s gracious founder, reminds you that this is a family business and welcomes you inside. The large open dining room is designed so that everyone can see each other, and the courtyard is visible through a wall of glass. Diners are surrounded by pale peach silk walls hung with Chinese brush paintings. A black granite bar flecked with copper picks up the warmth from the pastel walls, and gleams in the soft light cast by alabaster chandeliers. The room can be configured any way you want, with moveable partitions made of wood and etched glass. In one corner, a glass-enclosed section of the room is often used for a traditional wedding tea ceremony. Hidden shades can be pulled down for complete privacy, so this area can be used as a bridal dressing area or for gifts.
Yank Sing and the Atrium are available separately or together. Some couples have used the Atrium’s unconfined space to advantage, by having a troupe of lion dancers perform for their guests.
Whether you’re planning to serve just dim sum or a complete Chinese banquet, the menu will be customized to your tastes. Yank Sing uses only the freshest ingredients in its award-winning food, and offers hundreds of options, from delicate translucent dumplings and tender noodle dishes to time-honored favorites like Peking Duck and Sharksfin Soup. Chinese couples often schedule their wedding by picking a lucky day from the lunar calendar. In our opinion, any day you choose to celebrate at Yank Sing and the Rincon Atrium is a lucky day.
