Resort at Squaw Creek

Description

Spectacular Squaw Valley is a land with two faces: its winter countenance is pristine white and icy cool, with mountain peaks, pine trees and chalets half-hidden beneath a blanket of snow; the milder months are a blush of wildflowers and sunlit meadows, of balmy star-speckled nights and emerald mountain slopes. One of the best places to savor the Valley’s dual personality is the Resort at Squaw Creek, 195 hillside acres of relaxation, indulgence and breathtaking beauty.

Decked out in glass, wood and granite, the Resort’s recently remodeled interior spaces are designed to be lived in, not just walked through. Step into the spacious lobby practically any time of day, and you’ll find guests making themselves at home in the cozy seating areas. Some are curled up with a book in front of the large stone fireplace, others are chatting away, and a few are soaking up the mountain view through a wall of glass.

Outdoor areas are equally welcoming, whether you’re taking a siesta in a patio lounge chair, or hosting a special event for hundreds of guests. From spring to fall, wedding ceremonies and receptions simply belong on the Resort’s multi-leveled terraces. Most couples exchange vows on the Spa Deck. The bride makes her entrance from the guest tower, slowly descending the stairs in view of all her guests. She joins her groom to exchange vows against a gorgeous backdrop of tree-covered mountains. Large weddings are held at the Pavilion. Perched above the green valley floor, this sunny patio seems to embrace nature, reaching beyond its perimeter of colorful blooms and lacy greenery out towards the majestic High Sierras. A magnificent 250-foot waterfall cascades alongside the Pavilion and into a stream that ripples through a water garden just below.

The Resort’s scenic surroundings can also be part of your indoor event. The Grand Sierra Ballroom has windows with views of Squaw Valley, plus its own outdoor terrace. (The Ballroom also comes with a wonderful prefunction space that is custom-made for a cocktail hour.) For a more rustic ambiance, consider holding your reception in view-filled Cascades Restaurant, with its charming Tahoe–inspired furnishings. Take over one or more of its stylish dining areas, or reserve the striking private dining room in Six Peaks Grille for your rehearsal dinner. If you’d like to host an indoor/outdoor reception, have it in Ristorante Montagna, an elegant California-Italian eatery whose expansive dining room adjoins an outdoor deck. Yes, it is a relief to know that whatever your event weekend entails, from the rehearsal dinner through the ceremony, reception and post-wedding brunch, this resort offers a diverse selection of venues.

No matter how much fun everyone is having, you have to sleep sometime, and the Resort’s 405 newly renovated accommodations include suites with kitchens, fireplaces and flat screen TVs.

When they’re not relaxing in their suites, your guests will find quite a few things to do here. Besides the world-class spa, boutique promenade, distinctive restaurants and myriad of banquet options, there are activities for every season. Summer choices include a challenging championship golf course, tennis, biking and hiking. In winter you can downhill or cross-country ski (they have ski-in/ski-out access), snowshoe, ice skate, and take a sleigh ride. Heated swimming pools with Jacuzzis, and free shuttle service to Squaw Valley are available year-round. When we visited, however, we just wanted to unwind. As we walked around the grounds, breathing in the fresh, delicately pine-scented air, we decided this is one destination resort we wouldn’t mind revisiting.
