Redwood Ridge Estate

Description

Ask Redwood Ridge’s owner why she transformed her magnificent hilltop estate into a wedding site, and a soft blush steals over her face. "I got married here a year ago myself," she explains as she leads a tour of the grounds. "I know how beautiful my own wedding was, and I wanted to share that experience with other brides." Lucky indeed will be those couples who reserve this secluded aerie, which has been specially outfitted for weddings and events.

Once the family home of Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak, Redwood Estates is one of the loveliest properties in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Its 25 lushly wooded acres seem miles from civilizationyet the site is only five minutes from Highway 17 via Summit Road. When you arrive, your only difficulty will be trying to choose from among the many ceremony and reception options.

Your visit to Redwood Ridge takes you from the main road down a long, curving driveway that affords stunning views of the forests and surrounding countryside (the estate borders the 1,500-acre Mid-Peninsula Regional Park). Just past the playground, basketball court, and swimming pool on your left are the property’s tennis courts. The adjacent restrooms have been converted into a spacious bridal changing suite, complete with shower, bathroom and gathering room for the bridal party. Many couples find this setup ideal, choosing to stage their ceremony in the one-acre meadow just beyond the courts. With its sweeping views of the San Lorenzo and Santa Clara Valleys and the Monterey Bay, this spot is well suited to an exchange of vows—particularly at sunset.

Continuing down the road through the estate, you’ll encounter a large pond. Here, fish swim lazily about and lily pads attract colorful butterflies, while wildflowers and huge ferns grow everywhere in riotous profusion (the owner encourages brides to tuck a bit of wild lupin into their bouquets for luck). At one end of the pond, an arched cedar bridge leads to a small platform that rises above the water and supports a white wrought-iron gazebo. Consider holding your ceremony here; the slightly sloping area opposite the pond offers natural "theater" seating for your guests. A multi-tiered waterfall at the pond’s other end provides the perfect backdrop for wedding photos.

Directly opposite the pond is the "Cathedral," one of the estate’s most prized spots. Centuries ago, one of the ancient redwood trees perished, leaving a soft, mossy area in its place. Offshoots of the original tree have since sprung up around it, creating an intimate circular "hollow" entirely enclosed by the newer, towering trees. Some couples now choose to say their vows in this shady natural church, with family and friends clustered nearby.

Redwood Ridge offers still more opportunities for couples who seek that elusive "something different." At one time, the estate belonged to the Los Gatos Llamas and Alpacas Company. Since then, the barn that once housed the animals has been converted into a reception and dance facility. With its high ceiling, wooden walls and concrete floor, the building is rustic, airy and thoroughly comfortable. A large adjoining patio takes further advantage of the stunning mountain views. And just a few steps beyond, your guests (and wedding photographer) will savor the sight of the estate’s new Castle Vineyard, home to row upon row of Pinot Noir grapes.

Panetta’s Catering, Redwood Ridge’s exclusive caterer and event coordinator, has over 30 years’ experience in creating custom weddings and other celebrations. And if you treat the property with respect you’ll find few restrictions on hours, décor, etc. Make your way to this Santa Cruz slice of heaven, and discover California living at its very finest.
