Puddingstone Resort

Description

We know how stressful wedding planning can be. That’s why we’ve included this tranquil oasis—we challenge you to get stressed out here!

Although not a resort in the conventional sense (there are no overnight accommodations), Puddingstone is a great place to unwind. Stroll down brick paths that meander through stands of pines and eucalyptus. Listen to the trees rustling in the breeze. Fill your eyes with panoramic lake and valley vistas. You’re feeling more relaxed already, right?

Now, imagine you’re getting married here. With its impressive views of Puddingstone Lake and the San Gabriel Valley, the Gazebo Lawn is a fabulous site for a ceremony. There are two spots at the edge of the lawn to choose from, and at sunset either one will reward you with the grand backdrop of a rose and amber sky. The first area is an octagonal gazebo with flower-motif stained-glass panels. The second is a platform which extends partway off the hillside. While no embellishment is necessary, couples often set a metalwork arch woven with flowers or tulle at the front the platform. From this aerie, you’ll feel like you could simply take off and soar out over the shimmering lake below.

Some couples take advantage of Puddingstone’s custom canopy-style tent, which spans the lawn and creates a chapel-like feeling: a series of peaked metal arches down the center of the tent creates a corridor for the processional to walk to the gazebo.

After the ceremony guests are directed to the multilevel canopied Hilltop Deck for hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. The small pool on the middle level becomes a romantic focal point, with candles or flowers gently floating on its surface. While everyone mingles around the pool, the lawn is reset with tables for dining. The DJ or band typically sets up on the bandstand—the highest level of the deck—and a dance floor can be placed anywhere on the grass.

The owners added a special changing room for the bride. In keeping with Puddingstone’s goal to soothe all guests, the room is papered in a relaxing blue-and-white cloud-like pattern. Over the years, the resort has hosted Hawaiian luaus with fire dancers, Renaissance weddings and even a traditional African wedding where the bride was carried in on a carriage-like sedan chair on the shoulders of four men.

In 2005, a new secluded mountain-and-lakeview event site opened. Tucked away on a lush mountain top with unobscured views of Puddingstone Lake and the San Gabriel Valley, this tranquil setting is the perfect retreat for a couple looking for a private location. Create a distinctive and intimate atmosphere as you set your ceremony under a crisp white canopy with a sunset backdrop. A quaint nearby room allows a bride to calm her nerves before the walk down the aisle.

If all this isn’t enough to put you at ease, tucked discreetly among the trees are plenty of three-sided cabanas with hot tubs overlooking the lake below. You and your honey can soak in private, while you contemplate your future together.

Historically, Puddingstone has been very good for relationships: couples have gotten engaged in a hot tub, married at the resort, and even returned for an anniversary soak. "People come here for candlelight, starlight, and city lights," as owner Sandy Perkins says. "This place is different from anything else in the valley. It’s pure romance."
