Presidio Officers’ Club

Description

When the first Spanish explorers sailed into the Golden Gate, they established their military garrison in a strategic (and stunning) location overlooking the entrance to the San Francisco Bay. Known as the Presidio, this prime waterfront property spent the next 200+ years in the service of the Spanish, then Mexican and US armies. Now relieved of military duty, the Presidio is part of the Golden Gate National Park.

The Officers’ Club is situated in the Plaza de Armas (now referred to as the Main Post), the heart of the original Spanish settlement. According to a local historian, it’s considered the largest surviving Spanish-Colonial military structure in California and, thanks to the two very old bronze cannons at the entrance, it exudes a certain martial quality. With its white adobe walls, terracotta-tiled roof, and heavy rough-hewn doorways and windows, the building exemplifies Mission-style architecture. At night, the Club glows warm and inviting, its exterior lit up by spotlights in the front garden, and its interior illuminated by chandeliers and wall sconces.

During its military life, the Officers’ Club was the social epicenter of the Presidio, and the site of countless social and cultural events. With a huge ballroom, a lounge, and three different-sized anterooms, the functions ran the gamut from small officers’ dinners to grand military balls. Not surprisingly, it’s still in demand for all types of celebrations.

The main event space is the stately Moraga Ballroom, a classic Spanish Colonial-style room with white adobe walls, dark wood ceiling beams and large rustic iron chandeliers. There’s a huge gas fireplace at one end, flanked by iron wall sconces on either side. Across the room is a stage area with three windows that look out to the Plaza de Armas and beyond to the bay. Shiny hardwood floors throughout make this space perfect for dancing. A doorway to the left of the fireplace leads into the Garden Room, a small anteroom with colorful stained glass, suitable as a gift area, barroom or staging spot.

The Arguello Room adjoins the Moraga Ballroom and can be used in conjunction with it, or closed off and used separately. Although it maintains the Spanish-Colonial style of the Ballroom, it’s more intimate, with carpeted floors and lower ceilings.

It’s not very often you find yourself standing in a dwelling that’s nearly 200 years old, but in the Officers’ Club you can reach out and touch adobe walls that date back to 1812. Both the Mesa Lounge and the De Anza Room still retain some of the original adobe structure. The Lounge is cozy, with a fireplace, wood-beam ceilings and handsome parlor furniture. Its location near the front entrance of the Officers’ Club makes it an ideal place to greet guests. The De Anza Room, on the other side of the Ballroom, has low ceilings, heavy dark wood wainscoting, and a small tiled fireplace. Some parties have played up its tavern-like ambiance and set their bar in this space.

Steeped in history, the Officers’ Club lends considerable character to your event. Its convenient location—a mere ten minutes from downtown San Francisco—will make it easy for everyone on your guest list to show up. And, of course, they’ll all be wowed by the beautiful setting, from the moment they drive into the park until they drive home.
