Description
During the 1960 Winter Olympics, athletes from all over the world called the Squaw Valley Inn home. They came here to compete in the Games, but couldn’t help admiring the scenery: a quiet valley at the base of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, and a jewel of a lake just minutes away. But while Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe still look much the same as they did then, the Inn has undergone a remarkable transformation.
A world-class hotel with the charm of a mountain lodge, the "new" PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn has a truly original look—one you won’t find anywhere else in Tahoe. Public spaces and guestrooms all display an exceptional melding of decorative elements: earthy colors, rich fabrics and innovative metal sculpture. Couches and chairs catch the eye with their sinuous shapes and textured, sheened upholstery; striking light fixtures combine whimsy with copper, glass and chrome. Even the floors in the foyer and lounge are unusual—poured concrete laid out in geometric sections, each one tinted a different shade of muted brown.
The style of the main Inn building continues through the adjacent private dining facility and pool patio, the two primary event sites. The main reception room takes up the entire first floor of the two-story banquet facility. Its neutral, light gray color scheme makes decorating a breeze—the addition of flowers, greenery and linens turns the room into a lovely space for a wedding reception or private party. If you’re planning an intimate get-together, meeting or conference, the room can be divided by luxurious tapestry panels into four sections. The upstairs conference room is also multipurpose. Huge natural wood beams crisscross beneath a high peaked ceiling, giving the space the feeling of a large mountain cabin. Natural light, rich hues on the walls and blond wood wainscoting provide warmth and color. During a wedding, this room is often used for dancing or cake cutting; for business functions it’s great for large meetings or lectures. Both levels feature floor-to-ceiling windows that offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Whatever your event, it will be handled by a professional staff, known for their dedication and attention to detail.
Our favorite spot is the pool patio, a sun-splashed terrace that’s wonderful for any kind of celebration. Sheltered on two sides by the banquet facility and the restaurant, it’s bordered on the other two by aspens and pines, and ringed by Squaw Valley peaks. In the spring, ceremonies held here benefit from a beautiful backdrop of colorful flowers, mountains and open sky. Cocktail receptions or dinners also take place next to the pool on the patio’s raised level, or in the banquet facility.
One more popular option is the Balboa Cafe Squaw Valley, right across the street. Perfect for rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, brunches and other events, it features American Bistro cuisine and an extensive, well-priced wine list.
PlumpJack’s designers have created something unique: a mountain inn, banquet facility and restaurant with both the avant-garde elegance and sophistication of a cosmopolitan city, and the fresh simplicity of a mountain retreat. It’s not surprising that the inn is consistently rated in the "Top 20 Ski Resorts in North America" by Conde Nast Traveler.
