Pleasanton Hotel

Description

Built around 1864 by one of Pleasanton’s early settlers, John W. Kottinger, the Pleasanton Hotel (then called the Farmer’s Hotel) came to life during the "Wild Wild West" phase of the town’s existence. Seems that during the mid-1800s, this little city became a haven for bandits, bent on stealing gold from the ranchers passing through, flush from cattle sales in the gold country.

The hotel went through some rough and scandalous times until the 1960s, when it attained respectability as a restaurant. Since then, through several different owners and extensive renovations, the facility has continued to run as a restaurant, banquet facility and cocktail lounge with a dance floor and live entertainment. And the name? Well, it stuck even though the guestrooms upstairs are no longer rented out for overnight stays.

Today, the Pleasanton Hotel is ensconced in the center of Pleasanton’s historic downtown. Flanked by stately magnolia and palm trees, it announces its Victorian heritage with "gingerbread" detailing on the exterior and period furnishings and décor inside.

Most large events are held in the Victorian Ballroom, which overlooks the Garden Terrace and can be divided into two rooms for greater flexibility—perhaps use one room for an indoor ceremony or cocktail hour, followed by a reception in the other. Done in shades of ivory, burgundy and forest green, and featuring numerous chandeliers, Tiffany lamps and Victorian appointments, the Ballroom has a distinctive turn-of-the-century character. The Fireside Room is extremely popular for rehearsal dinners, showers and small celebrations. Designed like a cozy living room, it’s warmed by a brick fireplace and book-lined walls. A specially crafted stained-glass window depicts a horse and buggy used in the local harness racing that was prevalent in the 1930s. Adjacent to the Fireside Room is the Lounge, which can be reserved in conjunction with the Fireside or by itself for intimate gatherings. With its own bar and dance floor, your event flows seamlessly in the Lounge, from cocktail hour to the last dance.

The Garden Terrace is probably the Hotel’s most sought-after event space, not just for weddings, but for private parties, rehearsal dinners and outdoor luncheons. Flower beds mark the perimeter, and an ancient magnolia tree in the center provides shade. A winding path leads to an elevated brick platform at one end where ceremonies take place; at the other end a bubbling fountain brings a bit of the Hotel’s vintage ambiance outside. A brick barbecue and bar are available for all al fresco functions. Couples often exchange vows here, followed by champagne and hors d’oeuvres. Afterwards they host their reception in the Ballroom, and then invite their guests back out onto the Terrace for the cake cutting and dancing. The weather is usually so pleasant, however, that you might want to have your entire celebration on the Terrace. It’s particularly enchanting at night, when the air is balmy and you can dine and dance under the stars.

There aren’t any desperados walking down Main Street anymore, but the town’s Old-West spirit can still be felt here—especially in the Pleasanton Hotel, where history and hospitality make this local landmark a perennial favorite for special events.
