Description
There’s nothing stuffy about the Piedmont Veterans’ Memorial Building, a fixture of stately well-groomed Piedmont at the foot of the Oakland hills. Newly remodeled in 2008, this California modern structure built in 1953 is a favorite of civic organizations, private clubs, school groups and families. Far from fragile, it’s the action-packed center of Piedmont community life and a popular place for family-friendly events.
The Piedmont police are the downstairs neighbors, and the Fire Department and City Hall are right next door. There’s always something in bloom out back in meticulously landscaped Piedmont Park, with its wide walks, lush lawns and seasonal plantings. The Piedmont Public Works Department keeps the area neat and clean.
Behind the double glass doors of the balcony entrance, the airy vestibule opens up to a large community room with a light wood floor, high beamed ceiling and a big stage. Floor-to-ceiling windows on the north side of the room let in abundant light, and a small patio just beyond them allows guests an opportunity to step outside for a bit of fresh air and private conversation. The acoustics and sound system are first rate—good enough for the Piedmont Jazz Festival—and banquet tables can be arranged, leaving plenty of room for waltzes, cha-chas and tangos (which puts this venue at the top of the list for local dinner dances).
On the other side of the vestibule, a smaller room with a white iron balcony and filtered views of city and bay is a great spot for cocktails or a buffet. Adjacent, the big well-lit kitchen is a real caterer’s delight, with an ice machine, coffee makers, two sink stations and an enormous fridge.
All of this makes for a very flexible space and an accommodating canvas for creative types. Fundraisers here have included everything from vivacious cabaret-style evenings to Polynesian-themed events replete with carved tikis and elaborate luau fare. Decorative touches like accent lighting and fancy flora are easily added. All in all, it’s a marvelous value. East Bay and San Francisco hostelries are mere minutes away and Recreation Department staff—experienced hands at everything from weddings to pancake breakfasts to bird calling contests to the Fourth of July Parade—know just what to do to ensure that the vibes are good and the good times vibrant at your very special event.
