Paradise Ridge Winery

Description

So sweeping is the view from the western veranda at the Paradise Ridge Winery that a bride can get an inkling of what it’s like to be an eagle, suspended above hillside vineyards and oak groves, gazing for miles over the Russian River Valley. Yet the winery is just minutes from downtown Santa Rosa in the heart of Sonoma County wine country. Its proximity to the city, as well as its spectacular scenery, draws locals who flock to the veranda for sunsets and wine tasting from April to October. Wedding parties come to the 156-acre family-run estate, too, and not just for the view. Owners Walter Byck and the late Marijke Byck-Hoenselaars combined the European tradition of Marijke’s Dutch homeland with their own artistic tastes to create a unique setting for celebrations.

The centerpiece of the setting is a spacious, newly-remodeled two-story building whose white stucco walls, loggia, mahogany framing and veranda echo early California architecture. Built for special events, it houses the Vineroom (the estate’s tasting room), champagne cellar, and a professional kitchen available to caterers. Guests drive up to the winery through pastures, vineyards, and a unique four-acre "Sculpture Grove" of artwork set among the oaks. They then gather on the veranda before being seated for the ceremony on the southern Poetry Terrace, a terracotta patio with Bacchus faces spilling water into two wall fountains, a small bridal stage at the far end—and its own spectacular view across the valley floor.

For most weddings, the bride typically changes in a dressing room off the Vineroom. Making her grand entry through double doors onto the veranda, she descends eight steps to the terrace and continues on to the ceremony stage. The groom walks up a long path from the loggia to make his own entrance, because the owners feel it’s his special day too.

After the ceremony, they come out to greet everyone with trays of champagne. Then guests mingle on the Poetry Terrace and enjoy estate-bottled wines and champagne, along with beer and hors d’oeuvres. Later, the Vineroom’s doors are thrown open to reveal the space transformed into a dining area. Additional dining can be accommodated on the wraparound veranda as well. Paradise Ridge wines are provided on the tables (usually a white and a red wine selected by the bride and groom), and bar service is also available. Couples choose their caterer from the Winery’s preferred list; they’ll also receive another list of recommended vendors for everything from the cake and flowers to the coordinator, which they can use at their discretion. While wedding parties usually dance on the tiled floor of the Vineroom, some prefer to set up a band on the Poetry Terrace. The city lights twinkle at sunset, and when the moon comes up over the hillside, it’s glorious.

While most couples prefer a sunset wedding during the warmer months, winter weddings here are also lovely. Ceremonies take place in front of the fireplace in the Champagne Cellar (with the bride descending by elevator), followed by dining and dancing upstairs. For a more economical wedding, combine a ceremony on the terrace with a Saturday brunch in the Champagne Cellar.

Paradise Ridge’s owners are great supporters of the arts. In addition to the avant-garde pieces on exhibit in the annually changing Sculpture Grove (another potential ceremony spot), there is sculpture displayed all along the drive up to the winery.

Bridal couples are invited to ring the rooftop bell to mark their celebration, a ceremonial flourish that’s both meaningful and fun. It’s just one more Paradise Ridge tradition reflecting the owners’ Old World sense of what’s fitting, and honoring the newlyweds on their most memorable day.
