Paradise Gardens

Description

It’s more than just the name—Paradise Gardens really does appear to be a heavenly, almost mythical place. Upon arriving, the first thing that struck us was the lotus lilies blanketing half a large pond. They are enormous, yet so delicately colored with a coral-pink exterior and a sunny yellow center. The effect: simply breathtaking! Koi dart beneath the blossoms, bullfrogs bellow from the shadows, birds perch on the broad lily pads. A burgeoning family of friendly white-tailed ducks wait for their cue to paddle past bamboo shoots and bushy cattails and waddle up to the nearby office, where they’re fed by hand each day.

We passed under an arched thicket of branches to explore these idyllic grounds. Our stone-lined path meandered through stands of impossibly tall bamboo and exotic bird-of-paradise plants towering 30–40 feet or more. A jungle of fragrant flowers, bushes and trees surrounded us. We followed the sound of water, and found it spilling down huge boulders into a second, smaller lily pond at the edge of a great lawn. The only intrusion from the outside world was the faint scent of cilantro and thyme wafting from a nearby herb farm. Were we still in San Diego County, or had we been magically transported to some tropical Shangri-La?

Actually, this land was once a nursery that also served as a showplace for a waterfall maker. A family member recognized its captivating qualities, had her wedding here, and the rest is history. Paradise Gardens may no longer be a nursery, but it still employs two full-time gardeners to tend the diverse flora, and the property is now devoted solely to weddings.

And devoted it is. Each wedding is the only one of the day, enjoying the run of all five luscious acres for five hours of celebration. Get dressed in your comfortable bridal cottage, decorated in Victorian florals, wicker and lace. You and your bridesmaids will appreciate the two full-length mirrors that let you primp from every angle. Once you’re ready, a picturesque footbridge is a good place for some photos—although there’s hardly a poor vantage anywhere. You’ll soon be collected for a ride in a carriage drawn by Cisco, a gentle 1,870-pound Clydesdale. Hard to believe, but there’s no extra charge for this romantic jaunt to your ceremony site, usually one of two well-manicured lawns. The first, next to the larger lily pond, has a Victorian gazebo facing those gorgeous lotuses and a weeping willow. The second overlooks the smaller lily pond and two cascading waterfalls.

Theme weddings are a specialty at Paradise Gardens, and they’ve hosted everything from fairies to fire-dancers. Polynesian luaus are popular not only because of the lush landscape, but because of the many tiki torches and twinkle lights, permanent palapa-style band shell and real Hawaiian bamboo tiki bar. In fact, Fox Studios occasionally films here as a stand-in for Hawaii. And just in case you experience a tropical rain shower during your event, a permanent tent pavilion will shelter your party. Here’s to a day in Paradise!
