Why We Like This Place
Named after the famous Medieval bareback horse race (Il Palio) in the town of Asti, Italy, Palio D’Asti imports genuine Italian fare and ambiance right into downtown San Francisco. Using Asti’s traditions as a starting point, chef/owner Daniel Scherotter has created an award-winning destination for Italian food lovers who want authenticity with a healthy dose of modern, Bay Area panache.
At the ground-floor eatery—which sits on a surprisingly quiet block of Sacramento Street—warm, low light and a refined environment merge, making Palio D’Asti a favorite destination for rehearsal dinners and post-ceremony celebrations. The mood is festive yet tasteful, with vibrant flags adorning the stone pillars and dark wood accents complementing the abundant original paintings of Asti’s famous horse races. The Main Dining Room is now adorned by a modern installation in metal and stone by celebrated local artist Riccardo Spizzamialio. A bustling open kitchen with an oak-burning oven completes the picture of this inviting establishment.
In the Enoteca della Douja room at the front of the restaurant, couples often welcome wedding guests with champagne, cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres like wild mushroom pâté on crostini, Venetian-style Dungeness crab-stuffed devilled eggs, and herbed scallop lollipops. Here, diners are not only introduced to Palio D’Asti’s sublime food, they also get a taste of exciting art in the form of Marco Sassone’s wildly colored mural showing horses and jockeys in action.
When it’s time for dinner, folks can adjourn to either the Campo Del Palio main dining room or the San Pietro private dining area. In the Campo Del Palio, elegantly dressed round tables fill the space and formidable stone pillars and bright medieval-motif flags lend a castle-like air. Guests have full view of the kitchen, and at some events the innovative chefs invite diners into their domain, where they serve mouth-watering risottos and carved meats made to order.
Closed off by a curtain on the far end of the Campo, the San Pietro private dining area is almost a little eatery unto itself. This intimate room continues the decorative themes of the greater restaurant, but also sports floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto a traffic-free alley, and a small patio perfect for smoking cigars. The San Pietro Room efficiently accommodates rehearsal dinners, where the food for which Palio D’Asti is known can be enjoyed by all.
Zagat highlights Palio D’Asti’s “dreamy pastas, out-of-this-world risottos and other more exotic Northern Italian specialties,” and Gourmet Magazine has called this Financial District institution “one of the great restaurants of San Francisco.” Add to that the manor-in-old-Asti setting and you’ve got an unbeatable recipe for an Italian-flavored rehearsal dinner in The City.
