Description
Ensconced in the chaparral-covered foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains is the Padua Hills Theatre, a landmark banquet facility with a significant cultural past. The theatre was built in the 1930s as a centerpiece for a community of local artists. Claremont residents made a tradition of attending dinner theatre in the lovely Spanish-Colonial building, which also housed a workshop for neighborhood artisans. The theatre finally went dark in the early ’70s and the City of Claremont took it over as a historic site. By the early ’80s a new tradition was born here—the main dining room and adjacent grounds became a private special event facility under the expert direction of Chantrelles Fine Catering. No longer an Inland Empire secret, wedding couples from all over Southern California flocked to the theatre to get married in the tranquil wooded Courtyard, and entertain their friends and family with Old World panache in the inviting banquet hall.
Staged against the mountainous silhouette of the Angeles National Forest and overlooking a wilderness preserve, events at the historic Padua Hills Theatre enjoy a picturesque rural setting. The buildings and landscape capture the simple allure of vintage California, with red-tile roofs, natural materials like brick and flagstone, and a soothing palette of earth tones. The entryway features a long arbor cradled by olive trees. To the right of the arbor is the enchanting Courtyard, where brick and stone paths amble beneath the dappled shade of an olive grove. A profusion of flowers, ferns, and manicured shrubbery contributes to a lush ambiance, and Japanese lanterns or twinkle lights strung among the tree branches give wedding ceremonies an extra sparkle. Brides choose between two white gazebos, both surrounded by terracotta pots brimming with colorful blooms. The wedding aisle leading to the smaller gazebo passes under a canopy of leafy boughs. At the larger gazebo, the wedding party forms a charming tableau arrayed along its three broad steps.
On the other side of the arbor is the Terrace, which wraps around the banquet hall and provides a spectacular multifaceted view. In one section, guests sip their champagne while facing a grove where quails, hummingbirds and rabbits flit about the countryside. Another part of the Terrace looks out over the densely forested wilderness preserve. Beyond it all, the city lights glimmer on the horizon.
From the Terrace, French doors open into the Dining Room, beautifully set for your reception. The original hardwood floors still give off a rich luster, and the open-beam ceiling is decorated with garlands and dried flowers. Glossy whitewashed brick walls make a pleasing contrast to the natural wood trim. A neighboring alcove also has doors to the Terrace, as well as a small built-in bar used for gourmet coffee service. Directly adjoining the Dining Room on an upper level is the Fireplace Room, named for the oversized hearth, which gives off a warming blaze during the winter months. This is where folks kick up their heels and dance the night away—unless they’d rather drift out to the Terrace to savor the romantic evening panorama.
Your hosts at the Padua Hills Theatre, Chantrelles Fine Catering, are renowned for their delicious gourmet fare, themed buffets and elegant presentation. They’re also experienced event planners, so relaxin their hands your celebration will unfold as smoothly as a professional theatrical production—but you’ll get all the applause.
