Description
Back in the days when movie stars had Glamour with a capital G, Hollywood’s most famous leading men bought their hand-tailored clothes at the Oviatt clothing store. This swank haberdashery occupied the first two stories of the Oviatt Building, which was built in 1928 by the store’s dapper owner, James Oviatt. Mr. Oviatt reserved the building’s choicest spot—the Penthouse—for his own living quarters, turning it into an exclusive aerie of Art Deco splendor. Often referred to as a "castle in the air," this extraordinary venue is available to lend its sophisticated elegance to your affair.
The lobby of the Oviatt Building gives a hint of what awaits you in the Penthouse. Many of the glass and metal features you see here—the windows, doors, pillars and ceiling—are the work of the famous Parisian glassmaker, René Lalique. Lalique’s genius is evident in the Penthouse’s light fixtures and glasswork as well. Entering the elevator in the lobby, you may think you’ve stepped into a time machine, and when you walk into the Penthouse foyer, you’ll really wonder what year it is, because the entire place is a virtual time capsule from the 1930s.
As you and your guests wander among the Penthouse’s twelve rooms, notice the extraordinary details: the arched hallway ceiling, painted with stars to resemble the night sky and edged with Lalique light fixtures; the walls themselves that display autographed photos of Mr. Oviatt’s grateful (and wonderfully dressed) movie star clients; the Saddier et Fils Art Deco bar in the dining room; the living room’s parquet floor fashioned from asymmetrical arcs of precious woods; and the bathroom, which has a sunken marble tub and glazed terracotta tiles etched with a design of palm leaves. The entire penthouse is incredibly sensual and tactile, tempting you to stroke the rose-colored, cut-velvet chairs, the walls covered in beige moiré, the cool surface of the marble fireplace. Even the powder room’s commode and lavatory basin are veneered in burled maple and upholstered with cut velvet.
As though all this weren’t enough, the splendor extends to the outdoors as well. Although the gymnasium, tennis courts, garden pool and sand beach no longer exist, the terrace is quite breathtaking nonetheless. The space has a slightly Moorish feeling, with a colorful tiled fountain and arabesques of wrought iron adorning staircases and rooftops. A Spanish-tiled stairway leads you to an observation tower and a neon-lit tower clock where Parisian chime bells once marked the hour.
Whether you and your guests choose to lounge about inside the Penthouse proper, or sip Martinis as you view the sunset from the terrace, any function at the Oviatt Penthouse is bound to be spectacular. If you think "castles in the air" are make-believe, visit the Oviatt Penthouse, where seeing is believing!
