Description
Alejandro Orfila, the man behind lovely Orfila Vineyards and Winery, has led an extraordinary life. Formerly Argentina’s ambassador to the United States, and later Secretary General of the Organization of American States, he has hobnobbed with every U.S. president from Truman to Clinton. When he retired from his 39-year diplomatic career, he bought a small winery in sleepy San Pasqual Valley and turned its 70 acres into an unexpectedly world-class operation. Credit also goes to winemaker Leon Santoro and his dedicated team, who have overseen the operation since 1991, seizing the title of 2003 Winemaker of the Year for himself, while earning more than 1,100 medals for his wines.Orfila’s grounds are as spectacular as their wines, and they make a decidedly romantic backdrop for a wedding. Ceremonies are held on an expansive lawn with a classic wine country view: countless well-tended rows of Syrah, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes receding towards unspoiled hills rising in the distance. Only the occasional bird chirping interrupts the quiet of this valley, which becomes your cathedral. Its timeless natural beauty complements any celebration, whether formal, relaxed, or somewhere in between.
It’s a short stroll from the lawn to the patio, where your guests gather for cocktails. Surrounded by flowers and lit by charming gas lamp-style fixtures, it’s the perfect spot for mingling on a balmy summer evening. Bartenders typically dispense libations under the long, vine-covered grape arbor entwined with twinkle lights, as your family and friends sample hors d’oeuvres—you may also be inspired to host a wine and cheese tasting!
There is no shortage of photo opportunities at Orfila: down in the vineyard; in the sprawling, grassy rose park among white, pink, peach, yellow and red roses; and up in the aromatic barrel room (you’re sure to recall its intoxicating aroma every time you open your wedding album).
Are you planning to invite a lot of people? They’ll all fit under the 6,000-square-foot white pavilion adjacent to the patio, with plenty of room left over for your band or DJ and dancing on a hardwood floor. Heaters and ceiling fans provide comfort in any weather; leave the tent sides tied open to enjoy the breeze and the view of the vineyard when the weather is good (which is most of the time). Dramatic spotlights, uplights and “gobo” lights can be adjusted to create whatever mood you like.
In keeping with its commitment to quality, the winery only works with a handpicked coterie of preferred caterers who can handle the full range of events, from a simple down-home dinner to an elaborate gala. In addition, Orfila will assign an event supervisor to make sure everything runs smoothly. There’s plenty of free parking, and parties of 150 or more get valet parking at no extra charge.
Finally, what would make a more fitting keepsake of your marriage at the winery than a bottle of your favorite Orfila vintage, customized with your own private, commemorative label? Uncork one bottle per table and let your guests raise their glasses together, or give every adult a bottle to take home to remind them this was a very good year.

Fees & Deposits
One third of the rental fee is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 7 days prior to the event. Rental fees range $2,600–3,500 depending on the guest count.
