Description
Like a shimmering Emerald City, it rises against a backdrop of suburban high-rises. But rather than skipping down a yellow brick road to arrive here, you need only jump on the I-405 Freeway to find the “City of the Arts,” also called Costa Mesa, where the cultural heart of Orange County beats strong. While the complex known as the Orange County Performing Arts Center has been drawing lovers of live theater since 1986, its most recent addition—the $240 million Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall—resonates with new appeal. Couples interested in orchestrating a wedding ceremony, reception or rehearsal dinner here will find a venue offering a harmonious blend of contemporary elegance and cultural significance.Inaugurated in September 2006, the magnificent concert hall across from the complex’s original centerpiece is a marvel of undulating glass, stone and steel. Designed by acclaimed Argentine architect Cesar Pelli, the stand-alone structure mesmerizes with a 300-foot-long rippling façade symbolizing both the waves of sound emanating from world-class performances and those of the Pacific Ocean a few miles down the freeway. Ceremonies and receptions can be held in the orchestra lobby, where a ceiling finished in silver leaf soars 80 feet high. As guests enter, they’ll view a stunning work of architectural jewelry—a spiraling chandelier with 300 pendants tipped with Baccarat crystal globes, suspended in graduated lengths.
If you’re tying the knot here, you might choose to dim the lights as you take center stage one level up on the Box Tier. After descending the spiral staircase, say your vows under an imported arch or in an area set aside for the bride and groom. Alternatively, have your ceremony on one of several outdoor terraces or grassy lawns, including the pedestrian plaza that bridges the center’s time-honored and new components—it’s anchored by a towering metal sculpture by noted minimalist artist Richard Serra, appropriately called “Connector.”
For more private ceremonies and receptions, the new Samueli Theater offers its own valet service and an elegant lobby where rose petals strewn on a gleaming floor would add color to the neutral walls and flooring. Beyond the lobby, within the theater itself, an expanse of hardwood provides an ideal surface for dancing. Create any ambiance you wish in this private area, as the space is a blank canvas that awaits your special touch.
Also within the new concert hall, Leatherby’s Cafe Rouge is a sleek setting for a sophisticated reception or rehearsal dinner. At this three-star restaurant, as at all of the event options here, guests will enjoy the impeccable services of Patina Catering, the exclusive caterer at the center. Patina Catering offers the signature cuisine of its founder Joachim Splichal, hailed as a “legendary chef” by Bon Appetit and included among the nation’s “Top 50 Culinarians” by Nation’s Restaurant News.
Wherever you choose to hold your celebration in this striking cultural enclave, you’re sure to hit a high note. And long after the curtain closes on your class act, you and your mate can celebrate many anniversaries at what Pacific Symphony music director Carl St. Clair called “a beautiful beacon for the arts” in Orange County.
