Description
Founded in 1887, Occidental College is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning on the West Coast. Take a walk around this 120-acre campus, and you’ll see the college’s history reflected in its architecture and landscaping: the elegant Beaux Arts academic buildings and the oak-studded quadrangle date from the early 20th century, while the Johnson Student Center dining facility is state of the art. Although Occidental’s first and foremost reason for being is education, students are not the only ones who get to benefit from this beautiful environment: a wide variety of gardens, patios, rooms and other spaces is available for weddings.
To begin with, there’s the Gresham Dining Room, which offers a pleasant Elizabethan atmosphere. Creamy walls, high open-beamed ceilings, tall arched windows and oak tables and chairs create a setting that’s warm, welcoming and full of soft light. Right next door is the Branca Patio, a large glass-covered courtyard with a Mediterranean flair. It features red tiles underfoot, and a graceful arcade that encloses the space while framing views of the landscaped quad below—an equally great spot for a ceremony, reception or photo session.
The Herrick Memorial Chapel and Interfaith Center is a lofty, yet intimate, air-conditioned chapel that welcomes people of all faiths. As the couple exchange vows, their guests look on from three sides. Light filters in through magnificent stained-glass windows, bathing the entire space in a multicolored glow.
For those of you who’d like an indoor/outdoor event, consider the Neo-Craftsman-style Samuelson Pavilion. When you host your reception inside you still have access to your own private patio. Multiple French doors open onto a spacious terrace, bordered by an attractive mix of plants and flowers (part of Occidental’s award-winning landscaping). This versatile space is often used for hors d’oeuvres and bar service. A second patio nearby connects to a lawn and serves as an al fresco ceremony site.
The Music Quad, an arcaded courtyard with a pretty fountain, is popular for ceremonies, cocktail receptions and small sit-down affairs. And if you happen to have a theatrical flair, the Hillside Theater may be just the right spot for you. This grassy circular outdoor amphitheater is removed from most of the campus buildings and activity, and lends itself to "creative" events, such as the Greek-themed wedding staged by one thespian couple.
As a college, Occidental’s mission is to provide its students with a total educational experience. When it comes to weddings, their goal is to give couples a total event experience. Whatever setting you choose, the staff at Occidental will go out of its way to make your celebration a resounding success.

Fees & Deposits
A $400 nonrefundable room rental fee is payable when the site is booked; 50% of the minimum estimated charges are due 60 days prior to the event. Full payment is due three days prior. Ceremony packages start at $1,000. There’s a $3.50/person charge for food service at any location other than the Branca Patio and the Gresham Dining Room. An additional $25/staff member per hour will be added for events running over a 4-hour period, and an additional fee is charged for music and dancing at events. Wedding packages are available ranging $45–85/guest, including food, professional uniformed staff, glassware and china, nonalcoholic beverages and cake presentation and service. Conferences can be arranged through Conference Services at 323/259-2795.
