Description
Don't you just love the royal treatment? Then why not set your event in this landmark property in San Francisco's fashionable city center. Named "The Finest Indian Restaurant" by The New York Times, New Delhi Restaurant and Bar has service, style and cuisine fit for a maharajah. It's no wonder this colorful venue, situated near Union Square within walking distance of some of the city's finest hotels, has drawn a celebrity crowd for decades. Silicon valley moguls, U.S. Presidents, Indian film stars and spiritual gurus have all basked in the welcoming ambiance. Walter Cronkite sang with Turk Murphy's Jazz Band at their historic reunion here. Bill Clinton, Deepak Chopra and Indian artist Ashwarya Rai are also among past visitors.Upon entering the restaurant your guests will have fun catching up or getting acquainted in the establishment's long bar over cocktails—a mango or lychee martini, perhaps—and butler-passed hors d'oeuvres. From here they proceed to the dining room where massive hand-carved columns with golden Corinthian-style capitals rise to support the intricately carved coffered ceiling high overhead. The antique brick walls, lustrous mahogany wood accents and handsomely dressed tables add to an atmosphere that is both rich and warm.
Owner and celebrity chef Ranjan Dey, who starred in the PBS series, My India, has received numerous awards and gold medals for his culinary expertise and unique line of spice blends. When selecting dishes for your event, you can choose from a menu that revolves around Punjabi, Bengali, Goanese, South Indian, Gujrati, Mughlai, and Kashmiri style regional cuisines.
An expert in Indian food, culture and ceremony who caters events all over the state, Dey draws from a wealth of experience to create spectacular events that feature fresh ingredients excitingly prepared and perfectly presented in the manner prescribed by custom, be it Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Jain, Anglo-Indian Christian, Sikh, Parsi, Indian-Chinese, or an eclectic and exotic mix of traditions. "Diversity," explains Dey, "is a part of India." At New Delhi Restaurant and Bar—whether it's a ceremony, reception, social event or corporate affair—diversity is famously celebrated.
Once seated at their tables, everyone can relax as a regional dance troupe glides onto the beautiful, antique Florentine-tile dance floor. This is also a lovely spot for the pre-marriage mehndi or sangeet ceremony; or the day-of var mala, parchan and saptapadi rituals beneath a traditional mandap (wedding tent). Or, depending on the nature of your celebration, you just might want to let your guests get wild and Bollywood as the Indian music swirls around the room and henna artists work their magic on willing hands and arms.
Whether your celebration is one day or many (as Indian weddings often are), everything will be orchestrated to perfection by one of the city's most experienced restaurateurs. Your guests will be gloriously entertained and treated to one exotic dish after another as the courteous and discreet Kashmiri-costumed staff (costumes are by special request) attends to your every need. "We are creating memories that you can treasure for the rest of your life," Dey promises with a smile.
So "Bon appetit!" or, as they say in Hindi, "Shu bhojon!"
