Why We Like This Place
The cool, brushed aluminum exterior of the building that houses the Napa Valley Grille gives no hint of the warm, fragrant restaurant inside. From the moment you walk through the tall glass door, you’re transported hundreds of miles north to California’s most famous wine region—Napa Valley.
Memories of relaxed days lingering over Napa wine tastings are easily evoked in the wood-beamed, rustic-chic main dining room. A large sunny mural of a vineyard spans one wall; the others are the color of straw, and hung with paintings by Napa artists. Antique, work-worn wooden tables, a wood-burning fireplace, wrought-iron accents, and grape and olive motif fabrics all further the wine country ambiance. The open kitchen, with its broadly arching brick oven completes the inviting, countryside feeling.
If your celebration is large enough, consider buying out the entire restaurant. For smaller rehearsal dinners and receptions, reserve one or more of the Grille’s private dining rooms. The cozy Rutherford Room has its own fireplace, and can open up into the Silverado Room for additional space. The smallest private room, the Tasting Room, has large windows and a high ceiling. The Vineyard Patio, with its separate street entrance, also works well for intimate get-togethers, especially brunches. Although you can enclose this area with a privacy screen of greenery, you may just want to leave it open: a frisson of excitement is created here by the juxtaposition of earthy wine country atmosphere and cosmopolitan high-rises like the Armand Hammer Museum of Art across the street.
The Grille’s visual appeal is so compelling, it’s almost possible to overlook the real reason you’re here: an exceptional dining experience. Executive chef Joseph Gillard brings a distinctive touch to the rustic Napa-inspired menu using fresh, seasonal ingredients. The artfully presented, intensely delicious choices range from lighter seafood entrees to more robust fare. And the giant open kitchen allows you to watch the grilling and roasting first hand, an activity certain to whet your appetite.
Food isn’t the only thing on display here. Bottles of wine are visible everywhere, and they’re definitely not just for show. Most of them are kept in the large wine cellar at the front of the restaurant. Positioned under a high, midnight-blue ceiling zigzagged by tiny lights, this copper-and-glass "greenhouse" reveals the variety and depth of the hand-selected wine list. At the Napa Valley Grille they pay as much attention to the fruit of the vine as they do to the cuisine. Wine can be the highlight of the menu or a subtle companion—their wine directors are on hand to suggest food and wine pairings or to conduct an evening of winetasting.
The General Manager likes to describe this restaurant as 90% Napa and 10% L.A. So if you’d like to enjoy the charm of the Napa Valley without leaving Los Angeles, escape to the Napa Valley Grille. Fees & Deposits
Signed confirmation paperwork with credit card information is required to reserve your date. The full amount is due at the end of the event. There are no rental fees for private rooms, but a food and beverage sales minimum is required. Meals range $30–65/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.
