Murrieta’s Well

Description

An almost operatic love for romance might seize you when you first set eyes upon this lovely little wine estate, tucked away in a pastoral fold of picturesque Livermore Valley. Named for the artesian well where Joaquin Murrieta, the notorious Robin Hood of El Dorado, and his band of desperados purportedly watered their horses, this history-rich property is just the place for an event worth singing about for decades.

Your celebration can begin on the graceful Vineyard Patio. The enchanting 100-year-old winery building with its huge double doors and second-story balcony provides an elegant backdrop to every party played out here. Artistically and fragrantly framed in bright bursts of crimson—red roses, geraniums, wispy bottlebrush and a delicate Japanese maple—and by the 92-acre vineyard that yields the grapes for the property’s handcrafted blends of Meritage, Zarzuela and Zinfandel wines, this attractive outdoor space is ideal for a wedding ceremony, a reception, or any other affair set—California style—under a canopy of brilliant blue or starry-night skies.

For show-stopping entrances and tasteful transitions use the terracotta stairway accented with antique Spanish tiles that winds its way, via a gentle, lushly planted slope, from the patio to the quiet Upper Terrace. A red-carpet-caliber stop for photo ops, it looks out over the small adobe fountain that caps the well of legend and lore. Guests can stroll up this stairway after the ceremony to cocktails, passed hors d’oeuvres and gorgeous views that stretch from the chestnut mares whinnying in a lower pasture to a skyline of oaks and palms.

Dinner and dancing are served up in style in the wonderful old winery building. In its appropriately named Barrel Room, located on the ground floor, heavy wood beams and pillars, high ceilings, rustic stone walls and ancient wine barrels create a dramatic ambiance. The twinkling lights and twining vines that climb the broad wooden columns add a theatrical touch designed to transport your guests to another place and time. Any little additions—white-clad tables, glassware and cutlery, simple arrangements of flowers—look remarkable in this room. It’s an interior rich with the flavor of tradition and good living that typifies the wine country experience, one that’s sure to enhance the sparkle of your event.

At the back of the Barrel Room a wooden staircase leads upstairs to the broad tasting room foyer, where a trellised breezeway offers guests a private place to take a breather from all the excitement. At the foot of the stairway, an enormous gilt mirror doubles the pleasure of admiring your wedding cake. And throughout your reception, Wente Vineyards’ award-winning restaurant and catering staff (set up out of sight on the second floor) whisks upstairs and down with their mouthwatering pairings of fabulous food and fine Murrieta’s Well and Wente Vineyards wines.
