Description
Set high up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this historic winery has wonderful panoramic views of the entire Santa Clara Valley. Amazingly, it only takes fifteen minutes to drive here from the valley, and once you arrive, you’ll be delighted with everything you see on the mountaintop.
The two main buildings on the property, the Winery and Chateau La Cresta, were constructed in 1905 by French winemaker Paul Masson. Both are fashioned of stone masonry, and represent fine examples of French country architecture. Masson lived in the Chateau, where he often entertained guests like John Steinbeck and Charlie Chaplin (who had a fondness for pressing grapes himself). Host your own event here, and you’ll understand why Chaplin was such a frequent visitor.
The Chateau’s Vista Room is a favorite for parties, with its French antiques and spectacular valley views through almost floor-to-ceiling windows. A heavy wooden door opens out onto a brick patio where guests can mingle and dance. Small celebrations and executive meetings frequently take place upstairs in the Bordeaux Room, whose gleaming mahogany table seats twelve. Guests love its seclusion and private deck, which offers another opportunity to sample the fabulous vistas.
If you’re planning a large indoor event, like a fundraising gala or casino night, reserve the ivy-covered Winery building. Its stone walls and fragrant oak casks give the space a delicious, old-world ambiance. Intimate outdoor ceremonies, champagne receptions and wine tastings are held in the Wishing Well area, a tranquil flagstone patio and ivy-covered wishing well bordered by a grove of redwoods.
Expecting a crowd? The perfect spot is the Deck, an expansive wooden terrace at the edge of the crest. Flanked by landscaped gardens and oak trees, it provides a view of the valley that will take your breath away. If you need a theater setting for your event, the Amphitheater is seasonally available. It has a stage with a striking backdrop: the stone portal of a San Jose cathedral that crumbled in the 1906 quake.
This venue is so versatile you’re bound to find an area that fits your needs. In addition, corporations looking for team building programs will appreciate the innovative packages available, including gourmet cooking, treasure hunts and California wine tours.
The Mountain Winery has expanded its scope since its early days as a family winery, but still offers the same beauty and serenity that enchanted Paul Masson when he first came here almost a century ago.
