Description
The residents of Montclair are lucky—their diminutive village provides just about every retail store and service anyone would ever need. The only thing it has lacked is a four-star restaurant and an upscale event facility, but we are happy to report that with the opening of the Montclair Bistro, this problem has been deliciously solved.
In October 2004, Montclair Bistro debuted to rave reviews, and has been one of Oakland’s "destination" restaurants ever since. Chef and owner Henry Vortriede’s list of honors, awards and successful projects is longer than a strand of linguine, but here are a few highlights: he received diplomas from Le Cordon Bleu and L’Academie du Vin; Le Metropolis Bistro in Paris, and the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco are among the many restaurants where he honed his cooking skills. His company, "Chocolate Art by Vortriede" produced chocolate creations for Neiman Marcus and Williams-Sonoma. He served as Corporate Executive Chef for Hornblower Yachts, and he won the "Award for Food Excellence" as Corporate Chef for Pacific Marine Yachts. In 2005 he was voted the Chef’s Association of the Pacific Coast’s Chef of the Year. In a nutshell, this man is serious about food!
Chef Vortriede’s goal is to create what he calls "metrix cuisine"—a synergy between the food on the table, the art on the walls, and the ambiance of the restaurant, resulting in a feeling of comfort and harmony in the dining experience. Given his objective, it’s easy to see why he chose this building for his restaurant: its distinctive French Provincial architecture and décor combine in an extremely inviting venue.
Constructed in 1948, the building’s stuccoed exterior, dark beams and wooden shingles make it look like something out of a storybook. In the dining room and bar area, shades of moss green, gold, and deep terracotta predominate. Velvet draperies grace the bow windows, and abstract floral paintings contribute bursts of color. Across the flagstone courtyard is the Garden Room, a private banquet room whose topaz walls, frosted glass chandeliers, draperies and paintings produce the same "comfort and harmony" found in the restaurant proper. A curtained alcove serves as a romantic backdrop for the bridal table (or the focus of a business luncheon, thanks to a pull-down screen, podium and CD system). An antique inlaid sideboard, carved wooden chairs, ornate mirrors and potted palms add a touch of old-world grandeur to the space.
Patrons of the Montclair Bistro swear that Chef Vortriede’s cuisine is as good as anything you’ll find in San Francisco. His creativity and attention to detail is evident in dishes such as panko-crusted crab cakes with grapefruit remoulade; cherrystone clam and fennel bisque, and sauteed Eastern pike with beurre noir. And you know anyone who ran a company devoted to chocolate is going to make desserts to die for! So the next time you’re in the Oakland hills, stop by for a bite at the Montclair Bistro. Fees & Deposits
A $1,000 deposit is required to reserve your date. The balance is due on the day of the event. Rental fees range $130–330/hour depending on the day and time of the event. Meals range $15–75/person. Tax, alcohol and an 18% service charge are additional.
