Where do heads of state entertain when they want superb cuisine in a relaxed, garden atmosphere? At Michael’s of Santa Monica. Since its opening in 1979, this unpretentious venue tucked just north of the Third Street Promenade has remained one of Southern California’s favorite culinary sanctuaries, and the word has gotten out to prominent visitors as well.
Owner and renowned chef Michael McCarty defines his New American cuisine as "a contemporary emphasis on freshness, simplicity, and lightness," and this seems to apply to the restaurant’s decor as well. The California/Southwestern-style of the exterior, with its faux adobe walls, cactus and palms, moves effortlessly through the Spanish-tiled foyer into a more modern interior. One of the restaurant’s most distinctive elements is the artwork hung throughout. Michael, one of the founders of the Museum of Contemporary Art, proudly displays his own priceless collection, including works by noted artists Helen Frankenthaler and Robert Graham.
Michael’s can be reserved in sections, or the entire place made exclusively yours for that extra-special party. A comfortable lounge area to the right of the entrance features a bar and rose-colored couches. In the main dining room, green-velvet and blonde wood chairs gird round tables with flower centerpieces. The artwork dominates the scene here, while the open French doors enhance the light and breezy ambiance, and provide a peek into the Terrace and Garden.
This exceptional outdoor area is a lovely choice for weddings and receptions. Guests are usually seated on the covered Terrace, while the bride and groom exchange vows at the top of the Garden steps, with rock gardens, mini-waterfalls, and exotic flora as their romantic backdrop. Following the ceremony, friends and family dine at tables set with exquisite Christolfe silver in the lush Garden below. To set the mood, have a classical quartet play on the tiled Terrace, which has built-in heaters and a retractable weatherproof covering to ensure that your event will be comfortable, no matter what time of year.
For a more private affair, retreat upstairs to the intimate Palisades, Brentwood, or Santa Monica Rooms, where Michael’s attentive, though unobtrusive, service can be yours in complete privacy. Whether you’re planning a wedding feast, a birthday bash or a small seminar, pay a visit to this inviting oasis just blocks from the beach. And you never know who you might bump into.

Fees & Deposits
To reserve your date, a nonrefundable 50% deposit of the estimated total is required; the balance is payable the day of the event. There is a $500 coordinating/setup fee for weddings or larger social events. To reserve the entire restaurant, food and beverage minimums will apply, ranging $7,500–17,500 depending on the day of week. Luncheons run $45–75/person; dinners start at $70/person. Alcohol, tax and a 20% service charge are additional.
For business meetings or small functions, you can reserve the Santa Monica, Brentwood, or Palisades Rooms with a 50% deposit, which is applied to the final bill.
