Description
The vintage look and clubby, informal feel of this family-style restaurant make it an ideal place to host a relaxed, convivial rehearsal dinner, bridal shower or post-ceremony get-together. Although Maggiano’s is housed in a building erected in the mid-1990s, it looks as though it has been here since the early 1900s. It is, as one of its managers affectionately calls it, “like a lovely time warp.” Dark wood molding, checkered tablecloths, and classic hexagonal white floor tiles join with sepia-tinted and black-and-white photos of buildings, families and entertainers from the early to mid-20th century to create an appealing décor. Softly glowing lamps drop from the ceiling, and fans swirl lazily above the dining room. While many bridal parties enjoy the buzz and excitement of the main dining room, others prefer Maggiano’s private banquet room and its adjoining patio for their celebrations. The carpeted banquet room has a warm, old-fashioned feel, with high wainscoting and shiny brass sconces with etched-glass globes. The patio, which is accessed by French doors trimmed with lace curtains, is bordered by low hedges and flower boxes, and protected by a great canopy. Big boulevard-style street lamps light it at night, and large freestanding heaters ensure that it’s a cozy place throughout the year.
But good looks aside, it’s the family-style food, served on big platters that invite sharing and socializing, that’s at the core of Maggiano’s appeal. It in fact, it says something about the restaurant’s bottom-line dedication to food that it is a chef, not a maitre d’, who opens up the restaurant each morning and closes up each night. There’s a remarkably low turnover in their kitchen staff, some of whom have been with Maggiano’s since it opened. Everything they produce, from entrées and sauces to desserts, is made from scratch. Microwaves have been banned! The result is a restaurant that does a remarkable business—serving up to 800 meals on a busy night. An enticing menu full of old- and new-world Southern Italian recipes includes favorites like Gnocchi in Pomodoro Cream Sauce finished with Vodka and Roasted Garlic, Lobster Ravioli and Chicken Marsala.
Family-style service makes people relax and bond—exactly the thing you want to have happen in a wedding-centered event. When you add selections from Maggiano’s extensive wine list to its culinary creations, you have all the makings for an event that people will remember fondly for years to come.
