Description
"Madrona Manor"…the very name sounds like something out of a romantic novel, and if romance is what you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place. Built in 1881 by Sonoma County businessman John Paxton, Madrona Manor was the pride of Healdsburg during its heyday. The Paxton family sold their home in 1912, and over the next 70 years it fell into disrepair. The Manor got a new lease on life in the 80s, when it became an inn and made the National Register of Historic Places. Current owners Bill and Trudi Konrad have been working diligently since 1999 to restore this landmark to its former splendor, and they’ve succeeded admirably.
Pass under Madrona Manor’s arched gateway and follow the winding road through a dense forest. Suddenly the Manor appears, a classic example of Victorian-Gothic architecture with miles of lacy gingerbread and scrollwork, a mansard roof, dormer windows and columned verandas. The property occupies eight acres of prime Sonoma County real estate, whose tangled woodlands have been lovingly coaxed into a garden showplace with fountains, rolling lawns, knot gardens, a citrus grove and a rainbow of old-fashioned flowers.
The Manor’s interior shows the same attention to detail and eye for authenticity as the grounds. The first-floor rooms all have fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, carved sideboards and period art. The Amber Room features black-lacquered Japanese screens depicting graceful cranes, while the Music Room’s focal point is an antique piano. In the Rose Room, you’ll find a tiered table covered in dusty rose cloth for your wedding cake, along with Chinese jardinires and rose-painted plates. The Poppy Room, whose glowing poppy-red walls contrast with the fresh white molding, has a coffered ceiling, grape-patterned draperies and chairs upholstered in fruit-and-flower patterned needlepoint. The Palm Terrace is a large covered veranda, whose wicker furniture, potted palms and cheerful chintz upholstery make it reminiscent of a Victorian conservatory. As you might well imagine, the Manor’s common areas are chock-full of vintage figurines, hat stands, silver pieces, linens, books and all manner of items no proper Victorian home would be without.
Madrona Manor offers two types of wedding plans, day or evening, and each one makes ample use of the Manor’s felicitous environs. The favored ceremony site for either time is the capacious Wedding Lawn, bordered by masses of flowers and towering sycamores. Daytime weddings have access to the entire first floor of the Manor, allowing maximum flexibility for your event. The number of dining rooms reserved for your evening reception is determined by the number of guests you have, but wherever you’re seated, you’ll be surrounded by opulent period furnishings and an elegant, refined ambiance.
The Victorians were known for their elaborate multi-course repasts, and Madrona Manor is as authentic in this as it is in everything else. Thanks to Chef Jesse Mallgren, Madrona Manor was awarded the highest overall rating of any restaurant in Sonoma County by the prestigious 2003 and 2004 Zagat Survey and received an Award of Excellence from the Wine Spectator. Whether you decide on a daytime buffet or seated evening dining, Chef Mallgren’s considerable talents and renowned seasonal menus are at your disposal. Another talented staff member is wedding coordinator Isabelle Adams. Ms. Adams has helped over 800 weddings go from vague ideas to breathtaking reality, and she can do the same for you. Madrona Manor is also available during the week and in the off-season. Of course non-wedding events such as celebratory dinners or corporate functions are also welcome. If your love life could use a jump-start, you don’t have to wait for Valentine’s Day—just take a trip to Madrona Manor, where romance is in the air all year round.
