Le Chene

Description

An hour’s drive northeast from Los Angeles into Santa Clarita takes you to Sleepy Valley, a picturesque oasis of chaparral-covered hills, big sky and sage-scented air. Far from the hustle and bustle of city life, this enclave is probably the last place you’d expect to find a fine French restaurant, but Le Chene has been piquing the palates of locals and out-of-town visitors for over 27 years.

Originally built by an English couple in the early 1900s, the historic building caught the fancy of acclaimed French chef Juan Alonso back in 1980. Inspired by a small grove of majestic centennial oaks that grow in the property’s backyard, he christened his new restaurant “Le Chene”—French for “The Oak.” Extensive renovations and additions followed, and since its opening, this elegant dining establishment has earned a reputation as a “destination restaurant,” enticing visitors with both delicious food and rustic charm.

From the road, Le Chene has an enchanting Old World appearance—its granite river rock and white stucco exterior is reminiscent of whitewashed buildings found along the Mediterranean coast. A wooden arbor entwined with wisteria frames the walkway to the restaurant’s front door. Most stunning of all is Le Chene’s backyard country garden, a verdant counterpoint to the surrounding desert. Step out onto the restaurant’s rear wood deck, accented with ivy-covered trellises, and you’re greeted by a large, gorgeous contoured lawn, the perfect spot for hosting any kind of event. Shaded by a canopy of oak branches, the lawn can easily accommodate theater-style seating, rounds or banquet tables. If you’re counting on a big celebration, seating can extend to the deck as well. Guests will delight in strolling the paths that wind through the backyard past seasonal blooms and greenery. Or folks may prefer to sit serenely on one of the old-fashioned park benches and meditate to the sound of the brook that spills from an old wooden water wheel.

If your party evolves into a soirée, consider shifting the festivities inside the restaurant, which includes a private banquet room, two handsome dining rooms, a bar and four underground wine cellars. With its multitude of picture windows and creamy walls trimmed in light blonde pine or warm oak, Le Chene has a refreshing and light-filled atmosphere. The banquet room, a handsome A-framed space equipped with a parquet dance floor and private bar, is decorated with rotating works by local artists.

If all this isn’t enough to lure you to this gem of a restaurant, then consider taking a scenic drive here for a little wine tasting. Le Chene takes its wine as seriously as its food, and since 1995 they’ve been consistently honored with the Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence.” Their extensive list of French and California wines encompasses over 1,000 labels—including delicious vintages from the Alonso Family’s local Mint Canyon vineyards.

Whether you’re a Francophile or you just appreciate the finer things in life, you’ll love having your event at Le Chene—its incredible French cuisine, outstanding wines and pastoral beauty will make it an affair to remember.
