Laurel Mill Lodge

Description

Whether you’re seeking a place with unspoiled natural beauty for your wedding, a quiet atmosphere for a writer’s retreat, or just a place to get in touch with your "inner child," Laurel Mill Lodge has a variety of packages to suit your needs. Nestled in the tall trees of the Santa Cruz Mountains, this delightfully rustic establishment is not only a special event facility, but a virtual summer camp for grown-ups (and their kids too.) The stresses and strains of the everyday world are guaranteed to float away like so much dandelion fluff, as you experience the extraordinary effect of the Laurel Mill Lodge.

The 27-acre facility occupies the site of a lumber mill that operated over a century ago, and part of the Lodge dates back to when it was the mess hall for the lumberjacks. Today, the property is equipped to handle any kind of event, from an elegant wedding to a laid-back family reunion. In the Lodge itself, you’ll find a spacious room that can be used for meetings, sit-down dinners or just relaxing. Paneled entirely in very old redwood, with windows along one wall framing views of the surrounding trees, the room features a large fireplace, a baby grand piano and a big screen TV/VCR. The adjacent sunny deck, with its umbrella-shaded tables, overlooks a pavilion that can be used as a stage, a dance floor, or for an outdoor luncheon or dinner. The convenient arrangement of event spaces allows you to have your celebration indoors, outdoors or both. And from the well-outfitted kitchen, you’ll be able to serve gourmet meals to a crowd.

One of Laurel Mill Lodge’s nicest features is a vast verdant meadow, surrounded by magnificent redwoods and bordered by Soquel Creek. This sun-splashed space, carpeted in lush "barefoot grass," can seat a sizeable group for a wedding ceremony, concert or theatre production. An octagonal redwood stage with detachable handrails and arch can be placed anywhere on the meadow. (By the way, the skilled craftsman who built the stage is available to create custom props for your celebration. The meadow is also an ideal setting for camping, picnics, barbecues and outdoor games.) After dining and dancing, guests often soak in the 20-person hot tub, bake in the sauna or gather around a campfire with guitars and marshmallows.

One of the specialties of Laurel Mill Lodge is long, leisurely celebrations. In times past, when the mountain residents traveled by horseback, they didn’t just get together for an afternoon or an evening—they partied for days! This charming custom is still observed here, thanks to a variety of overnight options. Across the footbridge over Soquel Creek and up a short winding path through redwoods, ferns and forget-me-nots, you’ll find eight simple but cozy cabins, each with a king-size sleeping loft and a deck overlooking the creek. Another footbridge leads to six A-frame bunkhouses, each equipped to sleep four. Camping is permitted on the meadow. Just think—you could extend your rehearsal, wedding and reception over several days, so that your close friends and family have time to really get to know each other. Guests can stay even longer if they wish. Best of all, when you hold your wedding at Laurel Mill Lodge, you get the entire property all to yourself. The same could be said for reunions, parties, bar mitzvahs and retreats.

We could go on and on about the beauty and versatility of Laurel Mill Lodge, but only a visit will convince you how special this facility really is. To protect the privacy of each event in progress, site visits are arranged by appointment only.
