Lakeside Weddings by J/L Ranch

Description

You’ve been looking all over for a place to have your wedding. You’ve seen so many country clubs, hotel ballrooms and banquet facilities that your head is spinning, but none of them appeals to you. What you’d really like is something different, something with abundant natural beauty and plenty of personality. You also want "one-stop shopping," so you don’t have to worry about details. Well, such a place really exists. It’s the J/L Ranch, a 1,200-acre spread tucked away in the hills above Gilroy.

The facility’s focal point is a large pond, encircled by oaks and willows. Ducks glide serenely on its unruffled surface, and all around, golden tree-studded hills seem to hold the property in a gentle embrace. Far off in the distance you can see the farms and ranches of Gilroy, but nearby there’s hardly a trace of civilization. And even though it seems like you’re out in the hinterland, Highway 101 is only about five minutes away and San Jose itself is just a 30-minute drive.

As you approach the facility from the parking lot, the first thing you see is the main event venue, a large white wooden pavilion with a concrete floor and white canvas sides, flanked by a vast lawn. Receptions are held in here, and the sides can be rolled up or down depending on the weather. Even when the sides are rolled down, arched vinyl "windows" inset in the canvas allow you to enjoy the unspoiled surroundings. Inside, twinkle lights climb up the wooden supports, and hanging ivy plants dangle gracefully. Trellises of jasmine line one side of the building, filling the air with their heady fragrance. At the far end of the lawn, an old-fashioned carriage adds a touch of charming rusticity to the scene, while a flotilla of paddleboats tied to a diminutive dock is available for your more adventurous guests. Last, but far from least, is the main ceremony site: the wedding gazebo. This lacy white-lattice confection, perched over the water, is enlivened by potted white rose bushes and set aglow with strings of icicle lights. You can get married almost anywhere else on the property, but it’s hard to see why you’d want to!

J/L Ranch specializes in "affordable elegance" and all-inclusive, customizable wedding packages that cover everything from the table linens to a DJ. As for versatility, whether you’re planning a country-style hoe-down or a sophisticated soirée, J/L can handle it all. At one wedding, the couple combined their fantasies: she indulged her seashore passion by having the tables decorated with seashells and other marine décor, while he satisfied his love of the Wild West by coming dressed in full Western regalia. To top it off, they arrived in a buggy! At another wedding, the bride’s dream was to be Cinderella. Her elaborate decorating scheme involved constructing a castle on the lawn area, and being escorted to it in a rococo, gilded carriage. We don’t know what time the party ended, but we certainly hope it was before midnight!

J/L Ranch is also a dynamite setting for corporate parties, picnics and family gatherings. They’ve provided a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits (both of these can be covered if desired), and a tiny playground and other toys to entertain the little ones.

Incidentally, we didn’t see J/L Ranch at night, but we’re assured it looks like a fairyland, thanks to spotlights, lighted trees, and all those twinkle lights. The staff here really does take care of all the details, so the only job left for you is to have fun.
