Description
While so much of California has been citified over the last century, this part of the Peninsula has gone in the opposite direction. Once a place where farmers raised strawberries, herded cattle and cut firewood, its residents have worked hard over the years to preserve the beauty of the land and maintain its rural ambiance.
That reverence for nature is apparent in the way its homes and businesses are designed. Take the Ladera Oaks Swim and Tennis Club, for example. Bordering acres of permanent open space, it’s separated from this vast stretch of wilderness by a tree-lined fence, running the length of the property. Within its grounds, you find delightful meandering gardens, groomed with tender loving care by a dedicated gardener who takes great pride in his seasonal displays of color.
Club members congregate at the pools and on the tennis courts at either end of the facility, but day or evening you have exclusive use of the area in the middle—the gardens, clubhouse ballroom and patio—for your event. Three ceremony sites fit beautifully into the landscape. The lower lawn area, facing beds of hydrangeas and white birch trees, is ideal for an intimate gathering. You can also say your vows on the upper lawn, with its central fountain, surrounded by roses. For a larger wedding, consider the expansive lawn area and raised brick patio beneath the majestic oak tree on the other side of the two swimming pools.
Ladera Oaks has a first-rate setup for an indoor/outdoor celebration. Dining and dancing take place in the clubhouse ballroom, whose light hardwood floors, high beamed ceiling and large picture windows enhance the feeling of spaciousness. Guests can gaze outside and see the terraced lawn areas where ceremonies are held, along with shady trees, flowerbeds, rosebushes, and the lovely fountain. If they want a closer look, they have only to step through the glass doors onto the red brick patio, which abuts the gardens. To turn the reception into a true garden party, serve dinner on the patio, too. (Soft outdoor lighting makes dining after sunset particularly romantic.) For post-reception relaxation, a lounge next to the ballroom is outfitted with sofas, a large bar, and a fireplace that can be lit for your event. Since this room also opens to the patio, everyone can flow freely between the indoor spaces and the patio.
Because Ladera Oaks is very flexible about how you orchestrate your event, some couples have put an innovative twist on their wedding. One bride and groom, who had gotten married at the nearby Valley Presbyterian Church, arrived at their reception via horse and buggy. A fireman and his bride made their grand entrance by fire truck, sirens wailing. Another couple decided to have their reception first, followed by a wedding ceremony under a full moon in the Club’s gardens. With no restrictions on vendors, you can go with your favorite sushi restaurant for catering or have your Aunt Irene dish up her famous pot roast.
There is no question why people on the Peninsula love Ladera Oaks Swim and Tennis Club: it has great facilities, picturesque gardens, and an open, friendly attitude. These worthy attributes won’t be lost on you, either—after you have your wedding here, you may decide to come back and join the Club yourselves!
