Description
La Cereza is Spanish for cherry, and this Spanish-style winery is absolutely “cherry” in the same sense that surfers in the Sixties used the word to describe anything that was perfect. Actually, La Cereza is perfect in two attractive ways: First, it’s romantic. You can easily imagine you’re at the hacienda of a 19th-century Californio, one of those fabled ranchers who grew bold grapes and fat cattle, and lived the state’s earliest version of the good life. Second, it’s unpretentious. In this up-and-coming wine country, La Cereza offers much of the beauty and vibrancy of its more famous Northern California counterpart, Napa Valley, while still maintaining a down-home appeal. The winery, with its bright stucco finish, tiled roof, arcade, and arched windows and entryways, sits at the base of a grassy slope beside a canyon whose rich bottomland is dense with grapevines. The main buildings for bridal parties are the winery itself and “La Casita,” a sweet little stucco-and-tile house where brides can get ready in complete privacy. All the amenities one needs are provided—a bathroom, and a room with a day couch and a huge mirror. In front, geraniums and roses thrive in flowerbeds and an olive tree stands sentinel over them, while a trellis-shaded veranda runs around the building. La Casita has so much charm that it alone has persuaded many a bride to hold her wedding at La Cereza.
But the little house is just a pleasurable prelude. For the ceremony itself there is a beautiful domed gazebo, supported on six slender white columns and flanked by great flower-filled urns. Down a short path from La Casita, it stands at the edge of a small, impeccably cared-for lawn, and has robust leafy grapevines growing almost right up to it. While most couples exchange vows here, larger parties use the adjoining patio, where ceremonies take place under a flower-festooned metal arch.
Besides being a ceremony spot, the patio is often used for receptions. Another popular option for parties is the winery’s Barrel Room. This aromatic space is thick with big stainless steel tanks and smaller wood barrels. A nice touch is a roll-up door—when it’s opened you can amble out to a patio that overlooks a sweeping vineyard view.
On the rest of the property you’ll find broad lawns shaded by flowering trees and dotted with wrought-iron tables and chairs. From almost everywhere, the vista reaches all the way to the Palomar Mountains. Come March and April, there’s another grace note: the scent of orange blossoms fills the air as the large groves on the winery’s north boundary burst into bloom.
A final note; a bragging right, really: In 2006, La Cereza’s gewürztraminer and viognier wines won top honors at the California State Fair. Raise your glasses filled with one of these vintages, and your toasts will be even more special!
