King Gillette Ranch

Description

Good things come to those who wait, like the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, which spent three decades fundraising, negotiating and persevering to acquire King Gillette Ranch. This “must-see” location offers the glorious juxtaposition of a refined, 26,000-square-foot Spanish Mediterranean mansion—replete with tennis court and swimming pool—with a 600-acre nature and wildlife preserve.

Located over the hill from tony Malibu, this land was once home to the Chumash Indians, but it was King Gillette and his safety razor fortune that transformed it into the quintessential retreat for a country gentleman. In 1928, he commissioned famed architect Wallace Neff to create the absolutely gorgeous, sprawling villa that’s the centerpiece of the ranch. This two-story mansion, despite numerous owners and some minor changes, still exudes an aura of Golden Age elegance from its knoll-top perch.

To get to the mansion, you enter the park and drive down a long, meandering road until you cross a small white bridge. On your right is a shimmering pond that would make a very romantic backdrop for your ceremony, with your guests seated on the lush swath of lawn that slopes upwards towards the villa. But there are several other alluring (and more private) sites within the villa itself.

As you continue up the road, you’ll reach the porte-cochère that opens to a motor court on the left of the building where guests, during the mansion’s early days, would disembark from their coaches. Today they enter through the main double doors to an impressive, beamed-ceiling reception salon. This room, like several others on the first floor, leads directly out to a beautiful center courtyard. Equally enticing as a ceremony site or reception area, this open-air heart of the home provides a lovely view of the lawn and pond just beyond its white wrought-iron railing. A mosaic-tiled fountain serves as the focal point, while hand-painted tiles of caballeros courting senoritas, embedded into the white plaster archways, add a touch of history and artistry. On one of the enclosing walls, a large pastoral mural by a Franciscan monk is a reminder that the religious order once called this place home.

With access to the entire estate, you might decide to have cocktails outside, then head inside for dinner. The original Dining Room has high, cross-beamed ceilings and three-dimensional carved wooden doors. Along one wall is access to the courtyard, of course, and on a second wall are two wrought-iron Juliet balconies. Another fabulous choice is the original Billiards Room, with rich wood paneling and a dramatic deco fireplace angled in one corner. Everywhere you look you find another unique feature, giving you lots of options for taking advantage of King Gillette Ranch’s inherent “wow” factor.
