Description
If you remember the old Spanish-style red brick Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, you’ll be impressed by the new Center, which opened in 2004. Though it’s three times the size of its predecessor (and has lots more to offer), this new building of sand-colored brick and tawny Jerusalem limestone still manages to fit gracefully into the neighborhood.
The heart of the building is the light-filled three-story Atrium. An airy mobile, appropriately named Ruach (Bridge of Breath) sails overhead. Its slender steel arches are fitted with panels of dichroic glass that shine different colors depending on how the light strikes them. There are various interpretations of the sculpture, but many like to think it symbolizes the bridge joining the bride and groom and connecting their two families. The floor is paved with more Jerusalem limestone in tones ranging from light almond to amber. If you would like to be married on site, you can descend the glass-walled staircase from the second floor and have your ceremony in front of the two curved walls where life-affirming values are written in Hebrew and English. Or, if you’re tying the knot elsewhere, use this space as a prefunction area for cocktails. There is a platform for musicians, and you can set up a bar here as well.
Both of the Center’s reception rooms open to the Atrium. Kanbar Hall, the larger of the two, has a dramatically high ceiling, walls of rich paprika-red fabric, tall soundproof windows and a full-sized stage. It’s also outfitted with state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems (a technician can be arranged, too). The theater seating normally used for performances or lectures is fully retractable and disappears during events. Place your head table on the stage, or have the band here paired with a dance floor set right below.
Smaller receptions are held in the Fisher Family Hall, brightened by white and papyrus-colored walls and light filtering in from the Atrium through one wall of frosted glass. Like Kanbar Hall, it has a complete audiovisual system, and its blond parquet sprung-wood floor is perfect for dancing.
Note that other conference rooms are available on the second floor if you’re planning a Ketubah signing, Bedecken or Tisch. Also, there are three separate kitchens, one of which will suit your event: a kosher meat kitchen (under strict rabbinical supervision; kosher meat tableware is available), a dairy/vegetarian kitchen and a non-kosher kitchen.
The JCCSF has some perks you will love: First and foremost in this parking-challenged town is that the Center has its own parking garage. Second, the performer’s Green Room makes a terrific dressing room. With plenty of mirrors and a sitting room (even a mini-fridge), you and your bridesmaids have ample space for prep and touch-ups. Finally, if you hold your event at the JCCSF, out-of-town guests can get a special rate at a range of selected hotels in the area.
The JCCSF, organized in 1877, is the oldest Jewish center on the West Coast, and while its mission is specifically to foster a Jewish community, it is open to all. So come and build a little community of your own.
