Description
At Oakland’s Jack London Aquatic Center, the pleasures of being on the waterfront take center stage. Situated at the water’s edge across an inlet from the Alameda Marina, it gives guests an intimate view of the slowly drifting estuary and the ships, tugboats and sailboats floating by—one might even catch a glimpse of champion rowing crews and scullers as they train. The rhythmic clanking of boat lines and distant calls of seagulls provide the aural ambiance.
From the outside, this maritime-themed building cuts a crisp white silhouette against the surrounding blue of water and sky. Estuary Park, run by the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department, encircles the property with walkways along the water, outdoor sculpture and abundant trees. The Aquatic Center itself is dual purpose: the ground floor houses boats and sculls used for youth and adult water sports; upstairs on the second floor you’ll encounter clean, uncluttered event spaces that capitalize on the dramatic waterfront vantage point.
The Regatta Pavilion is a sizable banquet room with blond wood trim on white walls, exposed beams, and a 22 foot-high peaked ceiling. Light pours in from everywhere: two walls of the room boast tall windows that face the park and estuary beyond. There’s ample space for sit-down dinners, buffets, receptions, a DJ and dancing—and some couples have tied the knot here, too.
Off this main room, two decks expand the Regatta Pavilion into the great outdoors. The Marina View Terrace faces east toward the Alameda Marina, and can accommodate a small seated ceremony, outdoor dining, or a bar and passed hors d’oeuvres. A more diminutive deck, just right for escaping for a few moments of solitude, opens south to views of Estuary Park’s foliage and San Francisco in the distance. The Sunset and Horizon Wings, two small rooms also adjacent to the Regatta Pavilion, boast high coffered ceilings and, of course, views. They’re great for a bar or buffet, and some brides have used them as private dressing rooms.
The Jack London Aquatic Center’s greatest asset is undoubtedly its waterfront setting, but its well-kept interior, variety of rooms and plentiful free on-site parking (a valet can be arranged) add to its appeal. For those who love the water and are drawn to the maritime life, this is a winning venue for weddings, but anyone planning a private party, meeting or conference should consider it too.

Fees & Deposits
For weddings, a nonrefundable $500 deposit is required to reserve your date. Rental fees ($420–1,600 depending on the rooms rented) and equipment fees are payable 60 days prior to the event. For meeting and nonprofit rates, call for specifics. For caterers not on the preferred list, there is a $400 outside catering fee
