Description
With the Pacific on one side and forests on the other, two-lane Highway 1 just south of Mendocino begs you to slow down and take in everything along the way. Even so, you can easily drive past the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek without knowing what an enchanting place you just missed.
Lined on one side by an outsized fence of grizzled cypresses, the property rises up a slope to a large meadow, and beyond to a green wall of pines and firs. The view back looks out to the ocean across a wooded field that often has visiting deer. You immediately sense this coastal niche is a comfortable home to both nature and whimsy. All around you are flowerbeds and informal gardens, bowers and trellises garbed in hanging columbines and bright daisies, wild roses and riotous nasturtiums. White picket fences run here and there, and fanciful moving metal sculptures whirl in the wind. A circular birdhouse sits atop one lamppost, and every evening a lovesick frog in one of the little ponds announces his availability.
Weddings and receptions take place on the upper part of the property. The inn’s meadow can easily accommodate a large party tent, which comes fully equipped with a floor, sound system and heaters. Brides love the meadow at first sight, but they fall head-over-heels in love when they walk to the top of the meadow and look down over its upper edge. Most of them gasp when they see the grassy slope that gently descends the other side. Sunny, rimmed with moss-flecked trees and filled with birdsong, this intimate clearing has a faerie-circle appeal—it almost shouts out its perfection as a ceremony site. Add a simple arch and aisles formed from strewn flowers, petals and leaves, and you won’t find a more bewitching place to get married.
Two other spots where you can wed on the property are by the fireplace in the parlor of the old schoolhouse (nice for small groups) or on the beach at Buckhorn Cove, a private inlet just a short walk down Highway 1. Buckhorn’s 100-foot cliffs, sea arches, small wooded island and calm, sheltered waters provide an idyllic backdrop for the exchange of vows. Afterwards, everyone returns to the inn for the reception, their spirits uplifted by the power of nature.
Wedding parties of more than ten are asked to reserve the entire site so that their festivities won’t disturb the neighbors (the property next door has an agreement to take in overflow). The inn has ten cottages below the meadow, three luxury suites up the hill beside it, and four guestrooms in the main building. The wooden cottages are strewn hither and yon, with an English-style air of casual order about them. Painted gray-blue with white trim, they all have fireplaces and luxurious feather beds, and some even have full kitchens, jacuzzis and private backyards. The oceanview hot tub on the property is a favorite with wedding guests.
At sunset, the tops of the cypresses blaze with a gold so rich and burnished it looks like molten amber. Intensity of color and form are common here; they’re what make the Inn such a superb choice for a relaxed and natural setting. And it doesn’t hurt that this charmed place is in the hands of sweet-natured hosts with an inborn knack for hospitality.
