Remember that wonderful day when you found a perfect pair of heels that turned an almost-there ensemble into a seriously killer outfit? Well, keep that image in mind when you think of the Hotel Los Gatos, because that’s what this new hotel has done for downtown Los Gatos: taken an almost flawless place and pushed it into the realm of the downright ideal.
It’s accomplished this not only by adding a marvelous new architectural bauble to an area of turn-of-the-century buildings that’s already a visual delight, it’s made itself a must-visit luncheon, dinner and spa destination. The hotel’s introduction of a Kuleto’s restaurant and a Preston Wynne Spa has given Los Gatos residents the final excuse they’ve needed to stay close to home in the pursuit of pleasure.
It has also given brides an awesome range of possibilities. The sumptuously furnished and decorated hotel can function as a wedding and reception site, as a caterer, as a place for out-of-town guests to stay, and as a spa and pre-wedding beauty salon for the bridal party. The hotel’s architecture is Mediterranean in style, with an ocher and sienna exterior. These are deep, rich, warm colors that flirt with the sun and make the hotel look like a Tuscan villa. Inside the hotel grounds, well away from the street, there’s a huge terra cotta-paved courtyard with fountains, patios, walkways, and potted olive trees and palms. Wrought iron seems to be almost everywhere—in the twisted-ribbon-style sconces in rooms and hallways, and in the dining room’s freestanding iron candelabras. This generous use of Italian-style decorative metalwork complements the hotel’s extensive collection of Persian rugs and its interior palette of umbers, olives and rich yellows.
The hotel’s designers set out to intensify guests’ sensory and social experiences. They succeeded. The lobby, furnished with all sorts of groupings of chairs and cocktail tables, invariably inspires spontaneous socializing. Guestrooms have everything somebody who’s away from home could desire: custom furnishings made of dark woods with an antique look, bed linens made of ultra-dense Egyptian fibers, and T1 lines for fast internet access.
Kuleto’s, the onsite caterer and destination restaurant, is the latest in an award-winning series of hotel restaurants created by entrepreneur chef Pat Kuleto. He restored the prestige of hotel restaurants in California by insisting they operate as separate enterprises that could resist pressures to cut corners and lower quality. The result has been a happy symbiosis between hotel and dining room wherever Kuleto has participated.
It’s time to mention that the Hotel Los Gatos is a Chip Conley project. Conley, who operates 20 boutique hotels under the Joie de Vivre corporate name, is a hotelier with an uncanny ability to plug into the culture and figure out what people want. In this case, Conley has done it again, giving downtown Los Gatos the perfect finish to a great start.
