Description
Some grand entrances are lovelier than others, and at Harmony Wynelands taking that long-anticipated walk down the aisle is a beautiful experience. You glide past a bubbling fountain and through a rose garden, toward your groom who waits for you in an ornate gazebo. The air is perfumed by the flowers, and filled with the strains of the Bridal March, crescendoing through 1,500 pipes of an antique organ.
An antique organ, you ask? True, you wouldn’t normally expect to find a pipe organ at a winery, but if you knew the owners you’d understand how this one came to be here. Bob Hartzell and his wife, Linda, are as passionate about music as they are about wine. Shortly after purchasing these seventeen acres of old vine Zinfandel near Lodi, Bob had an opportunity to acquire the 1921 Robert Morton pipe organ that once accompanied silent movies at San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre. He couldn’t pass it up. And after he had the legendary instrument in his possession, he and Linda orchestrated the design and construction of an acoustically correct building—in the style of a picturesque country barn—to house it.
The barn, however, only looks like a barn from the outside. The interior serves not only as a home for the organ, but as a charming tasting room for the Hartzell’s award-winning wines and a staging area for weddings and special events. With its 25-foot-high cathedral ceiling, assortment of antiques, wine bar and country feel, it’s a congenial spot for mingling with a glass of wine in hand. During the winter weddings, Christmas parties and corporate dinners are held inside, and no matter what the season, the magnificent organ (whose pipes are visible through observation glass) is available to fill the space with music.
To the left of the wine bar wooden doors conceal a comfortable bedroom which offers ample dressing space for the bride and her attendants, closets for hanging gowns and a large connecting bathroom with full-length mirrors and a lighted vanity. The groom’s quarters are in a separate building nearby. This smartly decorated bachelor’s pad comes complete with a bed, couch, full-length mirror and kitchenette (sorry guys, no TV).
The two ceremony sites are just off the tasting room. Some couples prefer the rose garden, where they can exchange vows in the shade of a pergola, surrounded by flowers. Others choose the patio, which really offers two options: at one end is an elegant, six-sided wedding gazebo with stained glass panels; at the other is a woven iron archway with the vineyards as a backdrop. In either case guests are seated on the patio itself, where they have a clear view of the service. Evening ceremonies are especially enchanting with tiny fairy lights strung in the trees.
For the reception, linen-clad tables are arranged around the patio and shaded by canvas umbrellas. As guests dine and dance, they’re serenaded by melodies from the organ (or perhaps a harpist or string quartet). Complementing the meal are fine wines made from Hartzell grapes, and aged and bottled on the premises. Everything is as it should be: Linda, a virtuoso with arrangements, and Bob, a maestro of music and wine, will see to it that your celebration composed at Harmony Wynelands will resonate in your hearts for a long, long time.
