Description
Sometimes nothing but an outdoor wedding will do. And while you could get married on a tropical island or a mountain peak, you really just want something sweet and simple. Perhaps exchanging rings with your betrothed beneath an ancient oak tree in the middle of a meadow, as birds twitter in the background. It’s a lovely vision, and one that becomes a reality throughout the year at Hap Magee Ranch Park.
The park has a long history of happy gatherings, dating as far back as 1874 when Captain Swain and his wife first donated the land as a summer camp for orphans. In 1953 Hap Magee purchased the property for his cattle ranch. Locals still smile when they recall the rodeos the Magee family hosted over the next 30 years.
Set between the rolling foothills of Danville and Alamo, the 16.3-acre park remains separated from the surrounding residential area by mature oaks, pines and sycamores. Freeway sounds at the entrance are quickly forgotten, as you walk among the historic buildings bordering the park’s large central meadow and immerse yourself in the rural setting.
The restored houses from Camp Swain and the former Magee ranch provide an appealing backdrop for any event. Painted white with green trim, these three ranch-style buildings reflect the western character that once dominated the land. Our favorite is the Swain House, which has a private room for a bridal changing area and a covered front porch where you can serve hors d’oeuvres and display the wedding cake. Caterers will also appreciate the easy access to the kitchen inside.
Although most ceremonies and receptions are held on the meadow, the Magee House can be rented for an intimate wedding of up to 60 people. If you tie the knot here, your walk "down the aisle" will be a pleasant one: the murmuring of nearby San Ramon Creek provides soft accompaniment as you stroll from the side patio of Magee House to the back lawn, where your groom waits beside sheltering pine and oak trees. Afterward, the lawn is set up for a celebration that can also flow inside to the cozy living room and dining room of the ranch house. Another ceremony option is the Cottage. Its interior is too small to host a reception, but you won’t find a more charming site to say "I do" than in the front courtyard of this tiny guesthouse. Its shaded patio and lawn are enclosed by a white picket fence and it’s just steps away from the meadow, where guests can enjoy a sit-down banquet or cocktail party.
Many couples rent a large tent from a local vendor for their reception on the meadow. You can have a dance floor brought in, too, but the temptation to kick off your shoes and kick up your heels on the soft grass will be hard to resist. In fact one of the nicest aspects of celebrating your wedding at Hap Magee Ranch Park is that Mother Nature, with some help from the Parks and Recreation Department, has already done most of the decorating for you. As the sun sinks slowly into the west and the moon and the stars rise above the meadow, you’ll have all the ambiance any two people in love will ever need.
