Description
The pursuit of love and the thrill of adventure have drawn folks to Granlibakken Valley for more than 75 years. In the 1920s, tourists tobogganed down its slopes. In the ’30s and ’40s, Olympic hopefuls soared off Tahoe’s first ski jump, which was built here. Then in 1947, Norwegian Ski Jumper Kjell "Rusty" Rustad arrived on the scene. Smitten with the place, he built a log cabin ski hut near the base of the alpine canyon. In the decades since, Granlibakken has grown into a modern, all-season resort and conference center. Today Rustad’s hut has become a favorite spot for bonfires, barbecues and casual rehearsal dinners. And though the jump site is no longer in use, couples still come to this 74-acre mountain hideaway to take their own jump into matrimony.
Tie the knot just outside the Main Conference Center and lodge, where a stand of pine and fir trees lends privacy to a landscaped patio with an elevated stage. If you want to have your reception on the same patio, the staff will set it up with umbrella-shaded tables.
You can also eat, drink, and be married in any of the Center’s three main rooms. Guests celebrating in the spacious Granhall enjoy the view of trees through the room’s wide windows or from the adjoining patio. Within the sedate Mountain Ballroom, neutral tones blend easily with traditional wedding décor and heavy sliding panels can be opened or closed to accommodate the size of your group. For an intimate ceremony on a snowy day, the massive fireplace in Cedar House provides a cozy backdrop. The nearby cedar deck makes a casual setting for a post-ceremony cocktail hour, while the newlyweds drive to the lake for photographs.
The Executive Lodge, just a bridal-bouquet toss further up the hill, is almost a mountain retreat by itself. A vaulted open-beam ceiling and stone fireplace add old-lodge ambiance to events held here. The main room opens to a lush lawn, with a boulder-rimmed rise designed specifically for ceremonies. Host your reception inside the Lodge, or dine al fresco at tables shaded by umbrellas. The entire complex can be reserved for the occasion.
Granlibakken’s staff will do their best to make your celebration unfold just as you imagine it. A wedding reception requires a minimum two-night stay; barbecues and banquets are typically prearranged with the resort’s event coordinator; and a hot breakfast buffet is included. The facility’s lodges and townhouses provide comfortable rooms and suites, decorated to complement the resort’s natural setting, and there’s plenty to do: play on one of the five tennis courts, or relax in the heated swimming pool and hot tub. Hike the well-traveled footpaths up to the Tahoe Rim Trail or down into Tahoe city. Or, in the tradition of those who’ve come to the valley for both love and a winter adventure, ski with your new spouse down Granlibakken’s fir-sheltered slopes.
Note that wedding ceremonies held at Granlibakken must be followed by a reception on site. However, you can get married elsewhere, and still host your reception here.
