Grand Cafe at the Hotel Monaco

Description

Like the diminutive country it was named for, the Hotel Monaco combines French sophistication and Mediterranean charm, and it offers the added attraction of American efficiency and modern conveniences. Its eclectic décor harmonizes with almost any wedding style, whether you’re wearing yards of tulle and seed pearls, or sporting a linen suit and a single calla lily. And this versatile hotel also welcomes business or social gatherings of all types.

Situated in San Francisco’s bustling theater district two blocks from Union Square, the Hotel Monaco was built in 1910, but has recently undergone a complete renovation. The new owners kept many of the hotel’s original Beaux-Arts features, such as tall arched windows, stately columns, and black marble and bronze filigree staircases perfect for a bride to float down. Fanciful trompe l’oeil ceiling domes, hand-painted geometrical friezes, and a tasteful selection of modern art keep the look contemporary.

The Paris Ballroom is the hotel’s largest reception space. Red velvet screens, black marble buffet tables topped with miniature topiaries, and wrought-iron chandeliers provide warm elegance. Smaller groups can choose either the Vienna or Athens Rooms, both similar in style to the Paris Ballroom. All three rooms can be divided if desired.

For intimate celebrations, the Foyer is ideal. A striking white inglenook fireplace, graceful potted palms, and trompe l’oeil ceiling domes depicting fluffy clouds and hot-air balloons give the room a soaring, airy quality. The Sydney Lounge, on the lower lobby level of the hotel, manages to extend the open feeling of the Foyer through the clever use of mirrors, more potted palms and graceful Empire love seats. It even has its own scaled-down marble staircase, so necessary for that grand entrance.

If money is no object, rent the Grand Cafe Restaurant next door. Decorated in a lively Art Deco/Nouveau style in earthy shades of gold, brown and maroon, its cozy ambiance and cheerful fin de siècle posters are guaranteed to take the chill out of the gloomiest San Francisco day. We don’t know if Prince Rainier has ever graced the Hotel Monaco with his presence, but we’re sure he’d feel quite comfortable here, and so will you.
