Description
What do you get when you cross the menu of a classic brasserie with the bohemian décor of a Left Bank bistro and the casual vibe of a Southern California eatery? A delightful French-American restaurant, where the dining is délicieux and there isn’t a snooty French waiter in sight.French 75 is part of culinary impresario David Wilhelm’s family of Southern California dining establishments. Located street-side in Irvine’s Market Place, it’s remarkable not just for its fine cuisine, but for the inventiveness and attention to detail that has gone into the décor.
Apart from the main dining area, richly appointed with dark wood, etched-glass partitions and French poster art, this venue offers three smaller private rooms of varying sizes. Each has a distinctive color palette and personality. Depending on the mood you want to set for your bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, bachelor party or reception, you’ll undoubtedly find one that suits your needs.
The most theatrical room is Left Bank, whose warm and romantic ambiance makes it a particular favorite among brides. Walls are pale red, adorned with curved wrought-iron fixtures and sconces. Running along one side is a cushioned leather banquette, piled high with plump Moroccan-inspired pillows. There are lovely little surprises at every turn: a silk-upholstered dressing screen at one end; wreaths of iridescent feathers on the walls; an antique jewelry box atop a table. A decorative fireplace lit up with dozens of candles in the middle of one wall is a welcome backdrop for the bride and groom’s table.
The Left Bank is truly a visual treat, but its most delectable feature may be the lighting. Chandeliers, each a work of art unto itself, drip with delicate beading and glasswork. Narrow windows with beaded curtains let in slivers of natural light. White and red candles are everywhere, and at night when the lights are dimmed, their collective flickering helps turn Left Bank into a mini pleasure palace.
Square in shape, the Blue Room sets a somewhat formal, opulent tone. Midnight blue walls are decorated with mirrors in rococo-style gold frames and an eye-catching poster of a Lido showgirl dressed in little more than feathers and long black gloves. The furniture is dark wood, accented by brass-tacked blue leather on the chairs. And like Left Bank, the chandeliers are fashioned with beading and glass teardrops.
The Blue Room can be combined with an adjoining and slightly smaller space, the Green Room. Named for its green walls, its atmosphere is sultry, with dark leather seating, French 75’s trademark chandeliers, and chocolate-colored drapes and wood shutters.
The menu specializes in prime steaks prepared Parisian-style in 17th-century-inspired blue steel pans, as well as traditional French and American bistro fare. And remember, this restaurant is a pretense-free zone, so you get plenty of French flair but no attitude. The food and service will still be excellent, even if you can’t speak a word of French.
