Description
When city-weary Angelenos need to get back to nature, one of the surest-fire destinations is Franklin Canyon Park, located off Coldwater Canyon between Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley. Part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, this 600-acre park, with its variety of flora, fauna and water features, is a favorite getaway for hikers, bikers and pet owners taking a walk among the oaks, sycamore and redwood trees. Yet, despite providing a respite from the city, Franklin Canyon’s history is interwoven with some of L.A.’s most recognizable names and cultural touchstones.William Mulholland (as in Mulholland Dr., Ave., Highway, etc.) began overseeing an aqueduct to bring water into the booming new metropolis, and in 1914 constructed L.A.’s first reservoirs at the top of Franklin Canyon. Oil baron Ned Doheny, another name you’ve likely noticed all over town, also made his mark on the canyon, building a summer retreat and ranch down at the south end. Then, by the 1950s, Hollywood itself was using the canyon’s variety of outdoor settings as a rugged backlot for such iconic scenes as the opening of the Andy Griffith Show, where Opie, fishing pole in hand, tosses a stone into the reservoir, which doubled as a lake.
Today, 35 years after the original reservoir was taken out of commission, film crews still love this “lake” as a backdrop. So will you when you direct your own personal love scene here, because both the Lake and nearby Heavenly Pond offer rustic waterside locations for your wedding. The pond, complete with ducks, is a bit more tucked away, surrounded by tall marsh grass with an old wishing well on one side and picnic tables on the other (you can bring your own tables if you prefer a more traditional feel).
Larger groups seeking a less-traveled spot enjoy celebrating at Doheny Ranch, located at the end of a long road. One recent wedding turned the football-sized grassy field punctuated with trees into a Renaissance Faire. Thanks to Mulholland’s efforts and the remaining waterways this area tends to stay green even in dry winters, and is very conducive to photographs, particularly near the pond.
If, however, you love nature but would rather it provide ambiance than take center stage, your best bet might be the open-air Courtyard at the Sooky Goldman Nature Center (named for the driving force who helped quash development at the canyon and turn it into a park). Walk through the breezeway of the cluster of buildings that form the Visitors Center at the top of the hill, and you’re greeted with large stone planters filled with beautiful jacaranda trees and pots of gardenia and lavender that scent the air. The serene courtyard is a great place for cocktails or a reception, and offers a lovely peek at the mountains and wild terrain beyond its walls. With renovations underway to provide a new banquet facility inside the center’s auditorium, you’ll have still another option when choosing whether you want to celebrate right in the thick of nature… or indoors with all of nature’s glory right outside.
