Description
Walking into the two-story Italianate building, 1 Fort Mason, you’re swept back in time. The 1877 structure is so well-preserved—with its crystal chandeliers, overstuffed red leather chairs, and gilt mirrors placed throughout—that it’s easy to imagine dashing young officers drinking martinis and twirling women with red lips and pin-curled hair around the dance floor. For decades, this facility existed as an army officer’s club and residence that overlooked Aquatic Park and the bay beyond; now, it’s home to weddings and special events for those who prize the stunning hillside setting and the unmistakable aura of the past that the place exudes.
Brides and grooms often begin their festivities in 1 Fort Mason’s bar, a charming circular room at the rear of the building that features floor-to-ceiling windows and views of the boats along Fisherman’s Wharf. Here, guests mingle pre-ceremony, have a quick drink at the old-fashioned wood bar, and take in the bay from afar, their vista punctuated by the eucalyptus on the property. Because of the bar’s central location amongst the various event spaces, it functions as a lounge or overflow area during dinner as well.
Directly below this spot is a sweeping lawn at the back of the building, where outdoor ceremonies take place. With blackberry bushes and nasturtiums growing on the bluff and whitecaps on the water in the distance, it’s a distinctively San Francisco environment.
When it’s time for dinner, the party adjourns to the dining room, a wide open traditional banquet hall with contemporary light fixtures and copious windows facing east toward the bay and Alcatraz. Rounds set with colorful linens create a festive atmosphere for seated dinners or buffets. In the ballroom, which is located just past the bar and is the mirror image of the dining room, guests gather for dancing and cake-cutting after the meal.
The Funston Room is a comfortable changing room for the bride, and it also works well as an end-of-the-night nursery during events.
Most of us are unaware of the rich military history that 1 Fort Mason represents. It has been home to 44 different army generals, and received such guests as Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Whether you’re entranced by this history or are solely interested in the stunning bay views, 1 Fort Mason is a treasured San Francisco location for your celebration.
