Description
If you are envisioning a very formal affair where everyone is on their best behavior, the waiters have French accents, and there are more forks next to your plate then lettuce leaves in your salad—then this is not the place for you. However, if you prefer a relaxed, anything-goes ambiance in a whimsical garden setting, where the fare is hearty enough to satisfy your twin cousins who play linebacker for the USC Trojans—then mosey on over to F. McLintock’s Saloon & Dining House, where the spirited staff makes sure everyone has a rollicking good time.F. McLintock’s has been delighting crowds with authentic Country-Western atmosphere and great food since 1973. Standing against the hillside that overlooks the highway above beautiful Shell Beach, the dining house greets guests with a giant cowboy statue in the parking lot. The next thing folks usually notice is the wonderful aroma—tangy sea air with delicious overtones of oak pit barbecue that sets stomachs rumbling. On weekends, patrons without a reservation willingly wait over an hour for a table, which gives them time to enjoy the snapshots lining the walls, showcasing past special occasions celebrated at this lively hitching post. Fans can also wander into The Mercantile and purchase F. McLintock’s own salsa and barbecue sauce (both make terrific party favors!).
At the back of the restaurant, etched-glass doors open to the Riata Room. "Riata" means lasso, and this private banquet room boasts heaps of cowboy charm—Western memorabilia and interesting 19th-century artifacts abound. Polished oak chairs gather around family-style tables, and windows look out to a lush garden pond.
Outside the Riata is Hungry Horse Flats, a tri-level party space. The first level, the Breezeway, runs alongside the pond and is a pretty spot for the head table. The main action takes place just above on the Saloon Terrace, a covered patio landscaped with flowers and greenery. After sunset, antique lanterns and globe lights add to the festive atmosphere, and heat lamps keep things toasty. Lining the back wall is a patchwork of vintage license plates. (Other novelties include iron horse sculptures and a miniature buck wagon!). Adjoining the Terrace is Hungry Horse Saloon, a real Old West hangout where guests can belly-up during the cocktail hour.
Surveying the entire scene from the opposite corner is the Pepper Tree Deck, where intimate ceremonies take on a romantic simplicity. As loved ones gather near, couples say their vows beneath the feathery boughs of a pepper tree, with a slice of blue ocean gleaming in the distance.
Some couples embrace the Country-Western theme with gusto, costuming the guys in bolo ties and cowboy hats, for example. But the Flats dresses up right nice, too: Just drape luxurious fabric over the back wall, and festoon the rafters with garlands, tulle or hanging flower baskets. One couple drove up the Breezeway on their Harley; others have arrived by horse and buggy—let this unique locale bring out your own creativity, and the staff will do their best to oblige.
Famous for their ranch-style cooking and Western hospitality, F. McLintock’s provides an ol’ fashioned welcome that gives you and your event guests plenty to smile about.
