Fleur De Lis Chapel

Description

On one of Upland’s tree-lined streets rests a historic landmark: the Fleur de Lis Wedding Chapel. This quaint wood-shingled building is set far back from the road, and bordered by a low brick wall with a wrought-iron gated entrance. Stone stiles and planters enclose a petite garden, where climbing white roses, aromatic French lavender, and blooming foliage accent the appealingly unassuming façade. The chapel’s most distinguishing feature, however, is a tower with an iron bell. The church is named after the heraldic symbol of French royalty, the golden “flower of kings,” which makes several decorative appearances inside.

The Chapel was originally constructed in 1910 in another part of town as part of an Episcopal church. When the congregation eventually left for a larger home, the entire building was transported to its current location. A group of volunteers set about transforming it into a museum, but before the work was completed a fire broke out, ending the Chapel’s museum days. However, Fleur de Lis still exerted plenty of charm, and the city began to receive requests for ceremonies here. Eventually the new management set about beautifying the grounds and the interior, and helping brides make the most of their wedding.

The interior of Fleur de Lis conveys an endearing simplicity, but is by no means plain. Tasteful décor features period furnishings, such as a marble-topped mahogany hutch at the back. Three stained-glass windows showcase a cross and fleur de lis afloat in a sea of turquoise. The high, vaulted ceilings of rustic wood are graced with an antique crystal chandelier, and the rich oak of the pews, stage, and altar offer a timeless sense of comfort. Against the altar wall, a faded stencil of a cross and more fleurs de lis emblems are softly uplifting.

The Chapel is famous for its romantic candlelight ceremonies. The beginning of the wedding aisle is marked by creamy baroque columns topped with silk floral bouquets. The pews are decorated with swags of chiffon and white silk flowers, and as the gentle strains of the Chapel’s harpist resonate throughout the expectant crowd, the candles poised above each pew bathe the bride in a warm radiance. A spacious stage in front of the altar is illuminated by a pair of candelabras laced with crystals. The Chapel provides a spiritual environment without religious restrictions, and virtually any type of ceremony or officiant is welcome.

Other Fleur de Lis traditions include the “sounding of bells” and the “rose petal grand exit.” Following the ceremony, guests file out into the front garden. When the newlyweds appear in the arched entryway, the Chapel bell rings out a triumphant peal, and guests shower the newlyweds with rose petals and cheer. Behind the chapel, a cozy, tree-filled garden is an intimate setting for cocktails and receptions enjoyed in the dappled sunlight.

Easy and affordable wedding packages include a wedding director and referrals to trusted local vendors. Your director will happily assist in arranging fun options, like making your departure in a horse-drawn carriage! This is just one of the many flourishes at the Fleur de Lis that will add memorable moments to your day.
