Cypress Meadows

Description

Tucked inside a quaint residential neighborhood just north of Half Moon Bay Airport, Cypress Meadows is a welcome addition to the San Mateo coastal scene. This private banquet facility is hidden behind a pretty flower farm, and offers a secluded milieu for your wedding celebration. On these nine pleasant acres, adjacent to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, the air is sweet, tinged with a hint of salt from the nearby sea, and the atmosphere mellow and relaxed.

Your congenial proprietors are Randy and Sharon Dardenelle, who designed Cypress Meadows specifically to host social events. They've outfitted meeting areas and guestrooms with the latest modern technology, yet they've managed to instill the place with a timeless simplicity, beginning with the cedar board-and-batten building. Trimmed with river rock pillars and copper handrails, the structure conveys a comfortable, rustic vibe. Yet it's a fairly new venue, so everything is neat and fresh inside. Guests enter through the foyer, where a trio of skylights, a travertine tile floor, and a gas fireplace in one corner make an inviting first impression. Brides often place their gift table and guest book here.

Indoor gatherings congregate in the Cypress Room, a warm and friendly space bookended by two gas fireplaces glowing beneath tall, stacked-stone hearths. Depending on your preferred setup, the Cypress can accommodate up to 75 guests, with overflow seating on an adjacent terrace (which can be tented in case the weather doesn't cooperate).

The terrace is also a sublime spot for your cocktail hour, with a low trickling waterfall pond and potted plants setting the scene. The most striking feature, however, is the bird's-eye view of a lovely hillside garden, with a sprawling meadow down below. From the terrace, follow a loose gravel path that cascades downward through native plantings—flowering herbs, blooming succulents and fragrant lavender—that spill over low walls. Several stone seating areas built into the landscape entice you to pose for photos, framed by purple salvia and wispy ornamental grasses. Or steal a few moments with your sweetie, snuggling together on the old-fashioned driftwood swing.

At the bottom of the path, a vast green meadow, kissed with bursts of yellow wildflowers, spreads before you. On one side, a copse of lofty cypress trees feathers the sky; on another, a bank of lithe willows bends in the breeze. Opposite, Montara Mountain forms a jagged silhouette against the mercurial skyline. Wedding ceremonies on the meadow take on an informal, country charm coupled with a sense of wild majesty. Little decoration is needed to improve upon what Nature provides, which includes peek-a-boo ocean views.

Unlike at some locations, you're free to hire any caterer you wish to take advantage of the commercial kitchen with separate, easy access. Another bonus at this property: Two guestrooms on opposite sides of the building, each with its own private entrance. The nicely styled suites—one for the bride, one for the groom—open to a balcony overlooking the meadow. What an inspired spot for tossing your bridal bouquet, as you savor the culmination of your memorable celebration at Cypress Meadows.
